RichardB
I visited Weston Park recently, there was a display dedicated to Scotland Street - intended, as many such displays are - at providing School kids with some information, with a view to them learning more. The Museum assistant told me what she knew, then, with a fixed smile on her face, started to retreat as I started to blather on. So, I'd like any and all information about Scotland Street, old or new, collected into one "lump" so we can improve the Museum display and associated information. Links to previous Scotland Street postings on Sheffield History most appreciated <Cough, Tsavo, Cough, Cough> Many Thanks in advance. I'll attack SheffieldRecordsOnline and get a breakdown of residents/workers sorted by year as a start point. I'm sure there was a Pub of too on there as well lol

RichardB
I read somewhere that it was named so because if you were travelling that far north out of town you might as well be going to Scotland Good work, the most Northerly Street in Old Sheffield Town at one time - the district, rather than the Street, was known as Scotland. dunsbyowl1867
Edward Vickers 'Popular History of Sheffield' 'Being sent to prison for debt was a common thing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A debtors prison called the 'Sheffield Manor Prison' existed in Scotland Street... when these first opened in 1756, even a debt of six pence could mean a term of imprisonment!' dunsbyowl1867
Leader -REMINISCENCES OF OLD SHEFFIELD In Westbar green, where is now the bottom of Scotland street (before it was opened through to Queen street, and when the only issue was through the crooked Grindle gate, opposite Silver street head), was the residence and manufactory of Mr. Ellis, file manufacturer. The house stood backward, with palisades, and occupied the breadth of the now street. He was a very respectable man, but I am sorry to say one of his apprentices was Frank Fearn, who was gibbeted on Loxley chase for the murder of Nathan Andrews. Frank Fearn was naturally of a depraved disposition, and Mr. Ellis often predicted he would die with his shoes on. A story is told, that when on the scaffold he said : " My master has often told me I should die with my shoes on, so I shall pull them off and make him a liar." dunsbyowl1867
Leader REMINISCENCES OF OLD SHEFFIELD WRAGG : In Scotland street was Mr. Benjamin Parkin, a large spring knife manufacturer. He turned ' the front of the premises into a dram shop and carried on the business of a spirit merchant. The place is now Messrs. Mower and Pearson's. Near where is the pawnbroker's shop of Mr. Hides was, 60 or 70 years ago, Mr. Samuel Peace, grocer. He afterwards became a saw- manufacturer and acquired an ample competency. He was father of the late Mr. Charles Peace, one of our early aldermen. LEIGHTON: One improvement here is that the " Scotland street feast," which had degenerated into an excuse for drinking and immorality, is a thing of the past, but it died hard, and has not long since disappeared. SteveHB
A picture that I included in the 'MURDERS' Topic, taken from the corner of Lambert St, Crown Inn on the left, year unknown. And this one on Picture Sheffield looks to have been taken from a similar position

dunsbyowl1867
'Scotland Street's short length was well supplied with houses of refreshment. These included, the Crown, the Queen, the Fortune of War, the Farm Yard Vaults, the New turks Head, the Old Turks Head, the Fair Trade Hotel and the Crabtree.' RichardB
New, via PM from Roy1942 ... Re-information on Scotland Street, 1969/70 I worked on the conversion of New Connection Methodist Chapel from religious to commercial use; ie Minton Carpet Warehouse; but, before this could take place the body of the Rev Thomas Bryant had to be removed from underneath the floor beneath the pulpit. This was done by Sheffield City Council Graves Dept, they had to use sheerlegs & block & tackle; the reason being the coffin was cast iron with a wooden lining inside the coffin. This was placed on the floor then the cast iron lid was removed (under the supervision of a Home Office Rep) it was quite a sight to see him. The only part missing was his nose, his hair was down to his shoulders & dressed in his black cassock; as far as i know he was reinterred at Abbey Lane. RichardB
Welcome Roy, great information. Keep it coming, all information is welcome; we may even be able to help you out with questions and stuff... Was his nose cut off to spice his face ? What is the origin of that phrase, anyone know ? I know of the building, what years did he occupy the place ? I'm more aware of further up the hill, on the other side, The Queens !
ukelele lady
What an interesting story. I wonder how long Rev Bryant had been there? Did they know he was there or was it a shock discovery?
HughW
Sheffield Local Register 1760 Chapel in Scotland-street built by Mr. Bryant, a minister ordained by a bishop of the Greek church. Jan 1790 Scotland-street chapel, built by Bryant, occupied by those who had seceded from the body of the Wesleyan Methodists, on points of internal discipline. Alexander Kilham sometime minister. 16 Aug 1828 Scotland-street chapel, belonging to the Methodist New Connexion pulled down. 24 May 1829 Scotland-street Methodist New Connexion chapel (rebuilt) first opened for Divine service. Sounds as though the Rev Bryant may have been disturbed before! Hugh
