WOW What FAB pictures - well done you.

That must be one of the best displays of Xmas lights ever in Sheffield - something to be proud of and sure to be a crowd pleaser -

makes me feel very homesick!! :(

Homesick suzy?

I thought you lived at Manor Top somewhere near Beckets chip shop?

Come on wayneybabes, its the middle of December and I have just seen the weather forecast

"its very cold where Suzy lives" could be just about anywhere in Britain (or in fact most of Europe) at present <_<

I am not stupid enough to venture up to MEADOWHELL to photograph their Christmas decorations

In fact, - I avoid MEADOWHELL like the plague so I will leave it to some other idiot, - errr I mean member to get pictures of those lol

However we do frequently venture out to CRYSTAL PEAKS.

Must admit it was a bit scarey coming up that escalator with a giant Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling by a thread directly above your head :o

Once up the escalator the rest of the displays were quite good.

Sheffield History Christmas 2027

Anyone remember Meadowhall at Christmas-time before the Flood ? We used to go there by air-taxi before the ferry service started up from Crookes Ferry Terminal. I remember when you could buy a Christmas card there for less than £10 (or 3 for £25), Happy Memories.

Does it stop at the M1 Tinsley Viaduct, - it would make an excellent jetty / pier in times of high water, - and if they hadn't demolished those old cooling towers trhey would make excellent capstans forr mooring boats to! lol

I do belive that in our over politcaly correct world many of the old traditions are disappearing. Like you Dave it was always the twelfth night with us wich I believe was when the Three Kings delivered thier gifts. I don't know about in England but over here the schools are not allowed to do the Nativity anymore nor wish people "Merry Christmas". It has to be "Happy Holidays" so as not to upset those of the Non Christian faith.

Sadly, I have to agree with you on this. I believe that Christmas in the UK is being dragged down from many sides, including the Politically Correct Brigade and rampant commercialisim. I heard a kid say to his mum in Town, "I'm bored with Santa" followed by "What are you going to buy me in the Sales?" I know what my reply would have been - "NOWT."

When we were kids, Christmas was magic - and not just because we were younger - we made it magic, as did the shops and people who put up the Illuminations, too... The very fact that a light bulb could flash back then was magic and our immagination did the rest... I do Christmas Light displays each year and they take some planning from start to finish, but if just one person gets pleasure from seeing them, then it's been worthwhile.

I love the new pic's of Sheffield's Christmas Lights back in the 1960's and the crowds of shoppers crossing the roads - just as I remember it.

Anyone seen Easter Eggs in the Shops?! Give me strength...

We seem to be getting that way over here too.

I hope it never gets like that here but it's for everyone to make a stand because once the pc people

get their way ,there's no going back.

I go out of my way each year to search the shops for nativity scenes on Christmas cards just out of

protest. I find them and send them, don't let the pc brigade win.

No one tells the Germans what to do , they have beautiful nativity scenes on almost every street

at Christmas time. And they still smoke in their pubs.

Thanks Markbaby. They look better than I though they would. I just wish everyone would get away from using those cold blue lights though

Yep, those cold looking blue LED's are everywhere and can end up looking like a fuzzy blob when used on their own. Better if mixed with white LED's to break up the colour and give a more random effect. I can't really understand why blue is so common, as the technology is such these days that LED lights are produced in any colour and they don't even have to be really glaring ones either, some LED bulbs are made to give off a softer light. I like the colour-changing LED lights they had in the trees at the top of Fargate - they are nice.

I suppose LED's that aren't glaring are OK but I'm not really a fan of them.

They are more energy efficient, therefore cheaper to run and better for the environment.

Having said that I don't like these modern low energy light bulbs at all for a whole number of reasons and I object to being forced to use them instead of a standard Edison filament lamp, a type of bulb which has served us well for over 100 years.

I used colour changing LEDs on our tree this year and they weren't too bad but still don't have the "warmth" of tungsten filament lights. I don't think there is an affordable LED with the colour temperature of tungsten yet or I'm sure the market would be flooded with them.

Personally I don't like LEDs for public illuminations. My main gripe is that the intensity and colour is there but not the amount.

Because of the physical size of a light emitting diode, a lens has to be placed in front to project the light from it, a bit like a tiny torch

Seen from the front you get a bright light, but as you move away from the incident beam, the intensity diminishes quite rapidly, unlike the old tungsten bulbs which were visible equally in all directions.

Therefore the decorations tend to consist of hundreds of tiny pinpoints of light

I would rather see coloured floodlamps mounted on the street lamps but positioned to bathe the buildings and streets in colour, giving a much larger display, (a bit like the tree above, the reflection of the light on the white tree gives a better effect that the LED itself) and if these were colour changing LEDS it would be even better.

Rant over lol

We have a 500W halogen security lamp outside our house which lights the whole street up if someone comes to our front door.

Someone tried to tell me that it was "Brighter than a lighthouse" which I disputed.

But Stuart0742 told me it probably is a more powerful bulb than in a lighthouse as a lighthouse is "all done with mirrors and lenses".

So that final scene Jaws (can't remember if it was Jaws 1 or Jaws 2) where he gets the shark to bite through the main supply cable to the lighthouse, and it reacts as though the cable was carrying the entire supply of the National Grid is a load of rubbish then.

I rotated a 4.5 ton lighthouse mechanism with one push of my little finger last year; remarkable piece of engineering.

How many candle power is 500W, and what is the wattage of a torch with the power of a million candles (sounds better with a welsh accent lol )

I don't think there is a proper answer to that because the candela is a measure of luminous intensity (light output) while the 500W is the electrical power input.

Those green campaigners who are all too keen to sell me a modern high efficiency bulb will quickly and quite correctly point out that a filament lamp is inefficient and only a small fraction of the 500W it consumes actually ends up as light, most of it they will say is "wasted" by being turned into heat energy. However as these modern bulbs are more efficient a 500W one of them (not that they would want you to have something that so extravagantly squandered electrical engery) would turn a much larger proportion of your 500W into light energy and therefore give you more candelas for your money.

Now if the bulb was 100% efficient I am sure we could quickly calculate the answer to your question (I would have to look up how though, I haven't done anything on light intensity since A level Physics with Mr. Groarke at Ashleigh in 1973)

In any case my bulb was a halogen one and they get really hot so bound to be inefficient and looked down upon by the Green campaign.

I thought that Christmas decorations had to be removed by 12th night.

In town today all the lights are still up, the odd one is even still switched on.

OK, so the weather may have delayed work on dismantling the outdoor lights.

But even buildings with indoor Christmas Decorations like Castle Market have still got them up.

The Planet has an Albedo of 0.39 if that helps ...

(Also an album by Vangelis - progressive noodling if I remember correctly)

Most of the City lights have now been taken down.

Got to admit that the weather has been so bad this last couple of weeks it was probably safer and wiser to leave them up until the weather was fit.

Albedo is effectively the light reflectiveness of a surface (in space physics usually a planet)

The planet with a light reflectiveness of 39%, and therefore an albedo of 0.39 is the Earth.

Now if the Earth's surface was covered in snow (as a lot of it has been recently), and as snow is more reflective than land or water by virtue of its white colour, then the albedo of the planet should increase

With the City's Christmas lights being switched on yesterday I thought I would bring this topic up to the top of the pile again. Lets hope some of you budding photographers can take shots of the latest offerings and post them on here for those of us far away.

Having seen what they have been putting up this year, and realising the extent of the spending cuts this years "latests offereings" will probably be "more of the same" from last year rather than anything new and inspiring.

With money being tight at present during the recession perhaps Christmas Illuminations are at the bottom of the expenditure list :(
