Margaret Drabble, the novelist and author, was born in Sheffield, and spent much of her childhood in Nether Edge, and while she has not spent a lot of time in her home city since going off to university, she still regards the old place with affection. She is the daughter of Judge Drabble.

And mother of Joe Swift, of Gardeners' World fame and his dad is Clive Swift who plays the long suffering husband of Hyacinth Bucket. Her sister is A.S. Byatt, the critic and author.
