Les Dawson's widow is launching a fundraising appeal for a statue of the comedian

Les Dawson was one of Britain's best loved comedians and was famous for his stinging one liners.

Now Les Dawson's widow, Tracey Dawson, is launching a fundraising appeal for a Les Dawson statue in Fylde.

Les was best known for his deadpan style and for jokes about his mother-in-law and his wife.

He made his television debut in the talent show, Opportunity Knocks, and was seldom absent from British television screens in the years that followed.

Tribute to a legend

The aim is to erect a bronze statue of Les Dawson in a lasting tribute to the comic legend, who died of a heart attack on June 11, 1993.

Although born in Collyhurst in Manchester, Les was a long-time resident of the Fylde coast and famously lampooned his beloved home in his routines, with quotes including, "As you might know, I live in Lytham St Annes where it's so posh that when we eat cod and chips we wear a yachting cap!"

The launch will be attended by a number of celebrity fundraisers, including Les' wife Tracy, as well as fundraising committee members, the Tourism and Culture Cabinet Member Simon Renwick and officers of the council.

Fundraising

Fundraising activity will include benefit shows, a celebrity golf tournament and auctions aimed at raising sufficient money to erect the statue. The target is to raise £60,000.

Simon Renwick said that the council fully supports the fund and have agreed in principle to the siting of the statue on council land within Lytham St Annes, although the actual location is yet to be discussed.

Possible locations are Fairhaven lake, the promenade in St Annes and St Annes Square.

How can people donate?

Donations can be sent to: Les Dawson Appeal Statue Headquarters, St Annes Town Hall, St Annes Road West, St Annes, Fylde, FY8 1LW

And for more information, please contact the Chairman of the Statue Appeal, Jim Cadman, on 01562 883 943

Superb comic. Saw him at the Fiesta. Did a mean impersonation of Norman (over the garden wall) Evans.
