Hydrophobia was the term once used to discribe rabies,

So would this be rabies that killed the boy back in 1873?

See this post in Vitorian Suicide topic Link this is dated 1875, perhaps they did not like cats in the 1870's

Hydrophobia wasn't actually Rabies, but one of the main symptoms, and the harrowing description of he poor lad's death sounds like Rabies.

The animals must have been vicious around 1870,

Attacked by an ass, March 25 1868

On Monday evening Archibald Harper, between seven and eight years of age, son of Joseph Harper, file cutter, of Ecclesfield, was passing along the road between Grenoside and Ecclesfield, when he was attacked by an ass which was grazing on the highway.

The little fellow's cries speedily brought assistance.

The animal had gnawed his head his arms, and other parts of his body, and had trampled upon him.

The injuries he has sustained are not likely to be permanent, although had not timely assistance arrived it is scarcely likely that the poor little fellow would have escaped with his life.

OK Toots, eight Sheffield related Hydrophobia/Rabies cases heading to you and Stuart ("The Rabies-Ravers") via PM in the next five minutes; please stick 'em in a new posting in the Sheffield Chat thread, be a shame to lose them here.
