The building is on Mappin Street just round the corner from the Cavendish building on West street, the writing is above the entrance to a bar.

My wife speaks and reads a little Greek and she cnnot make it out as modern Greek, although as Richard states it could be ancient Greek as Richard notes, although for no reason I know, I have allways thought of it as Russian.

It still looks Greek to me, possibly ancient (although the actual writing isn't that ancient is it)

I don't think it is Russian as the Delta (the triangular symbol) and the Omega (the horseshoe looking symbol next to it, which those with a knowledge of electricity / electronics will recognise as the symbol for Ohms, the unit of electrical resistance) do not appear like that in Russian cyrillic character sets.

They do however appear like that in (ancient) Greek

Exellent and updated photograph vox.

I've been working on the re-furb at the Riverside Hotel

I tried for a few views from the windows but most of them are very dirty and don't open at the moment.

I got one or two that are worth posting

I've got to go back at some point so I'll try again.

Cambridge street?

No not Cambridge street sando, the wording on the old sign is virtually unreadable,

so here is another view, with a few bits removed.

Clue:

These premises were occupied from 1926 to 1984 by a well known manufacturer,

founded in Lancashire in the 1920's.

Countess Road, still can't remember the firm or read what the painted sign says though, maybe India Works?

Yes Oldboke, the building corners Countess Road & Clough Road,

don't think the sign holds any clues, it has been over written.

Can anyone name the firm/company that once occupied the building,

they were founded in Lancashire ... ?

Can anyone make out what this says?

It's on the corner of Oakland Road and Holme Lane.

Anyone who comes up with an answer to that one deserves high praise indeed UkeLass.

Let's see what happens. :)

Edit:

Could it be

Something

BAKERY
STORE
Something ?

I remember the place well, living just around the corner.

Throughout the fifties and sixties it was the emporium of Mr. Senior. It was a very dingy place and didn't fit into the category of chemist or herbalist but rather something in between.

The gossip at the time alleged that Mr. Senior had been a pharmacist but had been struck off for some misdemeanor.

I can remember having a septic finger having cut it on some old scrap iron in the River Rivelin.

Our doctor tried various potions and eventually told my mother to see Mr. Senior.

He sold us a cardboard pill box with some horrible foul smelling ointment in it and the finger was healed in a week.

Looks like it could be :

Something

Barker

Something

Store

Something

- then

The only one of those that remotely fits. Although, what those "somethings" might be ---

This is another difficult one.

It is on the wall of the back yard of Beres at the corner of Taplin Road and Middlewood Road.

I don't think the wording has anything to do with Beres, it could be something that was there

many years ago.

I'm guessing something like:

THORPE

Something

PROPERTY
REPAIRED

Edit:

If it is, they should have started with their own. :)

Number 23 Middlewood Road on the corner with Taplin Road was the premises of Althams who sold mainly hardware in the 50's / 60's but were also a ticket agency for British Railways.

On the blank side wall onto Taplin Road was a large notice board on which were posted BR timetables for many excursions around Britain.

When we were skint ( the normal state of affairs ) we used to study them as schoolboys and work out how long it would take to get to various places and how much it would cost us.

The little building with the painted sign looks like a little stable of which there are many examples associated with shops or larger houses in the neighborhood.
