Had a good look at it the other day.

This is what it says:

From the apex

Tel ---- 1669

Staniforth & Lee

Slate merchants

Slaters, Tilers

Contractors &

Property Repairers

(Assumption) Holly Lane

And on the narrow edge

Staniforth

& Lee

Slaters

Contracters

Dealers in all kinds of

Welsh

Westmorland

Slates

4 Holly Lane

West Street

Telephone 1669

Also noticed - Above the roof of the silver car, where the parking notice is, it says

Office.

Not visible on the photo

Can we take it as read that number 1 Neill Road has no connection with the firm other than having a handy gable on which to paint the advert.

Do our telephone engineering forumers know when 4 digit numbers were in use in Sheffield, it was certainly well before WW2.

I wondered that too HD.

But then I noticed the "OFFICE" painted adjacent to the rear door of the house, and wondered if it was indeed an office behind the home of one of the owners

I certainly can't find any mention of them at that address though.

Unless you went to Notre Dame High School For Girls

They had to wear bottle green knickers to match the colour of their school uniforms. <_<

..but don't ask me how I know that. :rolleyes:B)

I understand Dave, you saw them doing the hand stand. :o

This is the side view of Cartledges at the top of Portland Street.

The wording doesn't seem to look like Cartl.... more like Corn.

Where are the experts, what do you make of it?

To me that looks like

JJ OLIVERS

HAY, STRAW

& CORN STORES

WHOLESALE (AND RETAIL)?

Then it gets to the sloping word which looks like

CHISF--- but I can't think what that could be about, and I can't make out what's under that at all.

Edit:

Here, it looks like CHAFF ---

(I think chaff is related to corn and hay is it not? - What's left after threshing the grain out?)

At the top of Portland Street was Oliver’s, they were hay and straw dealers. The Germans dropped several incendiary bombs. They couldn’t have found a better target, it was full of hay and straw. They used to take it out on carts with their horses. The place went up like a torch. Dad went running down, he never went into the shelter, he always stood outside. He kicked the door in and led the horses out and tide them to a tree.

Yorkshire Telegraph and Star, 12th December, 1909 Incorporating the Sheffield Times

Fell Against the Fire

Sheffield Servant Girl’s Serious Burns

At ten o’clock this morning the Sheffield Fire Brigade were called out to No. 106, Upperthorpe, the residence of Mr. Oliver, a hay and straw merchant.

The brigade turned out with a motor escape and an ambulance, and found on arriving at the house that a servant girl, named Emeline Barnett, 20 years of age, who lives at 20, Nightingale Street, Darnall, has been badly burned. She had lit the copper fire and while standing near became giddy and fell against it. Her clothing ignited, and in her terror she called Mrs. Oliver, who was upstairs. She ran out into the yard screaming for help. When Mrs. Oliver got down she attempted to extinguish the flames, which had got well hold of the girl’s clothing, by means of mats and water. She ultimately succeeded, but not before the girl had sustained serious burns. Mrs. Oliver also sustained burns about the arms while putting out the flames.

The brigade rendered first aid, and took the girl to the Royal Infirmary, where she lies in a very serious condition.

I'm interested in the whereabouts of this "big yard " where the author lived.

Having lived at Upperthorpe I know of Springvale Road [ although he has it as Springfield Road ]

but I'm not sure where Hollis Terrace is. Another map maybe ? ;-)

Found it

Another poor quality mobile phone photo.

This is on Kent Road.

I can make out STORES at the bottom but that's all.

This shop, in 1956, was a butchers shop - the butcher was named Roberts - can't remember his Christian name but they had a daughter named Pauline who I dated at that time.

Can't throw any light on the lettering over the door though - possibly Roberts Meat Stores?

Athol Hotel, Cross Burgess Street

Surprised this one hasn't been noted yet.

Looks a bit woebegone: all I can make out is Athol Hotel on the bottom line.

Definately Greek characters there Richard.

Although we don't have a Greek embassy in Sheffield we do have a few Greek restraunts.

Any more clarification on the location more precisely than just "South Yorkshire"

If we know the address of the building it may reveal previous Greek owners or possibly a use with a Greek connection.

The building is on Mappin Street just round the corner from the Cavendish building on West street, the writing is above the entrance to a bar.

My wife speaks and reads a little Greek and she cnnot make it out as modern Greek, although as Richard states it could be ancient Greek as Richard notes, although for no reason I know, I have allways thought of it as Russian.
