I saw this nice one today.

Neil Road, SharrowVale.

I think I've got most of what it says.

Have a go and pass a few minutes.

I rekon its Staniforth and Lee

I think you are correct, however, my finds seem to pre-date this address.

PMd Richard

Staniforth & Lee is a definite.

Good work so far between you.

I've got it all apart from the row of very small writing across the center of the narrow wall.

I may have to try for a better photo to work that one out.

Also - the very bottom on the main wall has to be conjecture, but it ties in with what is on the other wall.

I've had a look again today and I've got the lot.

I'll leave it 'till tomorrow in case anyone else is interested in trying to work it out

I disagree with that vox, it's contractors & property ......could be builders.

I'd still like to know what it says on each side of the top window, it does look like a date at the right hand side.

I think we could be talking cross purpose here and not explaining which photograph

we are looking at.

As for the small wall on the corner , all I can make of that is

..........

Sorry UkeLass - I didn't mean it said "Conjecture" I meant we could make an assumption as to what it said at the very bottom, because of what is written on the other wall.

Can you remember Cartledges on the corner of Upperthorpe Road and Portland Street?

As kids we used to laugh at the old men's long johns in the window.

Here it is today with the wall paint fading away.

Makes the long-johns all the more amusing ! I'm just popping the old mans longjohns into the pawnshop, I'll be back with a pigs-foot for tea ...

No pawnbroker sign outside, - the familiar 3 brass balls, 2 high and 1 low(it means "the odds are 2 to 1 you won't get it back!" lol ) and it now appears to be a continental food place with halal meat.

Oh these dates are all before my time. The Cartledges our mums took us to sold clothes.

You know the type , XXL knickers , long drawers in the skin tone pink, liberty bodices , white with rubber buttons.

I can still remember wearing those as a kid, sort of a vest with sleeves in.

Behind the counter were large dark wooden drawers with brass handles, each drawer labelled with the sizes of the underwear.

And the packets of thick brown ladies stockings ugh, not like the stockings of today.

You could also get your navy blue school knickers there too. he he

Had a good look at it the other day.

This is what it says:

From the apex

Tel ---- 1669

Staniforth & Lee

Slate merchants

Slaters, Tilers

Contractors &

Property Repairers

(Assumption) Holly Lane

And on the narrow edge

Staniforth

& Lee

Slaters

Contracters

Dealers in all kinds of

Welsh

Westmorland

Slates

4 Holly Lane

West Street

Telephone 1669

Also noticed - Above the roof of the silver car, where the parking notice is, it says

Office.

Not visible on the photo

Unless you went to Notre Dame High School For Girls

They had to wear bottle green knickers to match the colour of their school uniforms. <_<

..but don't ask me how I know that. :rolleyes:B)
