Many pubs bear the name Durham Ox after the bull calf bred by Charles Colling ay Ketton Hall in 1796. Originally christened "The Ketton Ox" it becane a national celebrity as "The Durham Ox" when in 1801 the titanic animal was purchased for the very large sum of by John Day of Harmston near Lincoln. He took the beast on tour of the country in a specially constructed carriage pulled by 4 horses. It was on show in London for a whole year alone. The bull died 15 April 1807.
