One to ponder while I'm away.

I don't know what the building is or was.

Just off a major route in and out of the city.

Not easily visible if you're not looking for it.

Near an old cinema building.

Just off Nursery st?

Try again.

A more of a major route than Nursery Street.

It is just visible behind the buildings on a main road.

I'll go for bottom of Duke Street area but it is the little sign at the bottom right

hand corner that's bothering me. It says Boys Toys????

It does indeed say Boys Toys

The old cinema is a couple of hundred yards away.

Syrup has got it.

I'll leave it a while in case anyone else wants to keep on thinking.

I, for one, won't get it, but if you let me know I'll look into what it was ... and if we can find out about it while you are not here.

Near an old cinema building.

Is it near an old cinema building, or is it near a building that looks like an old cinema but is actually an old pub, the Firvale Hotel, which looks like a cinema building, but which stands next to the site of an old cinema ?

The building that now stands is (or was) used as a sort of social club and the cinema was demolished years ago to make way for a filling station which in turn has now made way for a small supermarket.

Not sure about the cinema connection, but I now know where it is I'm sure, a very famous hangman shares his name with a shop in front of it I think.

Not sure about the shop but:

The cinema is a hundred yards or so down the road and just round the corner.

The shop was Pierrepoints grocers:

Would that be 'Pierrepoint' or 'Pierrepont'

it is Pierrepont in the 1965 directory, we have a Topic on here about them.

This building has been mentioned on Sheffield History before, it is the old church hall to Christ Church Attercliffe. After the main church was destroyed by enemy action in 1940 it became the replacement church for a number of years.

I attended a wedding of an uncle in the little church in around 1952 and later on the christening of a niece in the early 1970's. I understand that the building now has a secular use.

I'm a bit bemused by the reference to the cinema and old pre-war cars as the only cinemas I knew of in that location were the Attercliffe Palace and the Adelphi around the corner. I can't recall a car called an Adelphi.
