You live and learn, or in my case you learn and then forget again.

I thought it was going to be an earlier (1930's) Vauxhall model because even their more recent names such as Velox, Nova, Astra and Carlton sound a bit like cinemas.

Especially Carlton, since I lived just across the road from the Arbouthorne Carlton cinema.

The Riley marque sported some very romantic names for me as a child when car spotting. The 1923 Redwing, 1928 Brooklands, 1929 Kestrel. 1929 Monaco. 1930 Stelvio. 1931 Alpine. 1934 MPH. 1934 Falcon. 1934 Lynx. 1934 Adelphi. 1934 Kestrel Spite. 1936 Sprite. 1936 Merlin. 1953 Pathfinder, though In the motor trade these were known as the Ditchfinder due to their poor road holding. W/E.

Many of these names are either well known racing circuits or names of animals (mainly birds) with a reputation for speed.

One to ponder while I'm away.

I don't know what the building is or was.

Just off a major route in and out of the city.

Not easily visible if you're not looking for it.

Near an old cinema building.

There's bizarre Vox - at the same time you were posting that I was taking the same photograph!

One to think about.

This is a photograph taken with intention to submit into the SH Pub Signs Topic,

on taking a closer look at the detail of my photograph,

it then occurred to me that I had photographed the wrong side of the sigh,

and something was missing.

Now, for what reason would one side of a sign vary from the other

and what is missing from this side of the (artists impession) pub sign,

that can be clearly seen on the other side ?

(PH name edited out)

Guessing a pub name initially; Gate ? Cock ?

and as to what is missing ... I'll take a punt at a building on the hill, maybe a Church of a spire missing from the skyline - all just a guess.

There was once one in New Orleans, apparently,

and a brand of razor blades also comes to mind.

Replies are welcome from any SH members who want to have a guess at the answer.

And the bit that is missing from the south side of the Rising Sun sign is the Rising Sun.

I wonder why ?

No idea why the sun is missing from one side, but the paintings on either side are the same, but very different in many ways.
