Not hard this one,

hopefully it will fill up, so it can be stocked come Summer

I remember seeing that one and it reminded me of this one:

An even bigger hole. It's been there for ages now but where?

No takers -

I don't know what they were intending to do on the site but whatever it was it ground to a halt a long time ago.

Clue.

It's not far from Crookes Valley Park if that gives anyone any ideas.

I'm guessing that for the benefit of some of our well educated but less than intelligent students, and in order to make visitors from Alfreton feel at home that it probably says :-

SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY 0 MILES

lol

I think this is an old milage marker, probably for Buxton. Must have passed it thousands of times on the 95 and 52 but don't actually remember seeing it.

Another early-hours post from me.

None of the above.

Unless of course the Commemorative plaque said "Up there is --- and Down there is --- "

I've driven down there daily for years and I've only just noticed it. I saw it because the traffic kept me at the side of it for a while this morning.

How about "Up there is HEAVEN and Down there is HELL"

Any good?

Well I suppose some parts further down the hill would have been described as Hell back in the day, whereas further up the hill would have been Heaven by comparison. :)

---------

Bayleaf is very close.

Bayleaf is very close.

The clues indicate that it must be a boundary between UPPER and LOWER somewhere or other.

Bayleaf has suggested Hallam, although he called the "lower" one Nether Hallam.

As it is a well known anomaly that Sheffield University is in Hallam but Hallam University is in Sheffield I am going to stick with Hallam.

Is it a boundary between UPPER Hallam and LOWER Hallam?

The following is based on a verbal account given in a lecture by Prof Armytage to his students in 1974.

This post once marked the boundary of the town of Sheffield.

The original building of what later became the University had to be built outside the town of Sheffield because of violent incidents associated with the medical lectures given in a building on Leopold Street. He said that a servant with refreshments from a nearby ale-house had walked in on a human dissection, she ran out in a distressed manner which wound up the drinkfuelled mob into a riot. This became The Museum.

As the post is on a bridge it must have been moved from somewhere else close by.

The "top" side says Nether Hallamshire The "bottom" side says Sheffield Township.

There's something on the top as well but it's difficult to read at 20MPH

I can't see myself parking up and walking down there.

Didn't see DickDioxides interesting snippet till now.

We were both posting at the same time :)

Any guesses as to where this weak bridge is?

Crosses above Storth Lane at Nethergreen, but not sure of the road name, could it be Belgrave road?

You're as close as a near person sando. :)

It's actually Graham Rd. Belgrave is a bit further up.

Funnily enough I'd just been working on Belgrave when I drove down the hill to this spot.

Here's another showing the original cast iron railings. Obviously too low for modern safty regs. Now obstructed by more recent railings.

At least they left the old ones there.
