Is it some sort of water standpipe? Some where near the fat cat?

Item - maybe open to suggestions

Location - Quite away off

It is some sort of manual pump, the handle is still there.

Guest plain talker

Yes you're spot on 'plain talker'

Have a Christmas Pudding lol

What year did it become a pub please?

now, I know that my husband and I were newly married when the fight was going on to prevent it from becoming a pub. so that would have been 1993/4 so judging on the need to do any works on the building (like stripping the pews and stuff) would have taken it to about 1995 ish

Crosspool by any chance?

You need to travel south east a few miles

I have had to blank out a bit of the sign, to hide the name, well it is actually 2 parts of 2 signs.

The golf course of Abbey Lane, near the junction with Abbeydale Rd South?

Ok with the golf theme but not Abbey Lane

Question now is where else can you play golf?

When you walk about in Sheffield and any other town or city there is usually more to be seen historicaly if you look upwards at the upper floors of older buildings.

For example what my be a "Costa Coffe" at street level could actually be quite old, this is what I am trying to demonstrate with some of these "Mystery Locations"

So to contiue, where is this guy to be found

Apologies for the quality, it was taken on my phone

The guy in question is reputed to be Judge Hugh McCalmont Cairns (1819-1985) once Lord chancellor who now overlooks Church Street.

I like the wall dial on the corner of the building, nearly always right, no moving parts.

Back in the 60's I'm sure it used to be a bank

And the winner is Birley Golf Course, the prize is in the post

OK, so that's the prize for WHERE it is

But WHAT exactly is the mystery item that looks like some sort of pump?

Old manual petrol pump, in the car park of Birley Wood Golf Course/ Fairways pub

I suppose it is a leftover from the sites farming history

Mystery Location, this time without a photo

In the Then and Now Topic, 3 pubs/hotels are mentioned in Howard St;

The Howard

The Cossack

The Globe

There was a 4th, what was its name?

Ball/Golden Ball, number 72 (also known as the Lamb)

Black Horse, number 64
