I don't know what they have turned it into but I could have a good guess.

Thank you Steve, I should have stepped back a few paces to take the picture

but I would have got another two cars on. Last week all the wheelie bins

were lined up outside. So inconsiderate for us picture takers. :rolleyes:

20 years ago I think it was a plating firm.

Maybe Carver Plating.

If it was, the building was called Australia Works.

Just along the road from there (Watery Street/Malinda street) I noticed what at first I thought was a row of 3 surviving Georgean style houses. On looking closer, and looking round the back, I realised that the corner house is a complete new-build.

There are also some new builds at the rear.

Nice to see someone take a bit of trouble to both preserve and build something nice for a change.

The residents permit holders schemes generally have a nominal charge at the meters. The ones I'm aware of are about 20p per hr.

Look carefully at the signs around that area Dave. There are some bays which allow free parking for about an hour or two.

Here for instance.

..and since last week this has appeared on the ground between the 2 signs, which both point to this location, as being the site of the pay meter.

I bet before long there will be a meter attached to the top of that bolted foundation and i will be expected to pay.

Fortunately I buy Trade Permits which allow me to park in the residents schemes. (Still doesn't guarantee a free space though.)

Shoreham Street is one of the worst. Trying to find somewhere to unload is impossible. Usually have to double park then shift the van to somewhere as close as possible. A bit of a sod if you need some odd little item from the van and have to go back for it.

Then of course you do it all again when you're finished.

I can spend as much time doing all this lot as I do working sometimes.

Actually I don't mind having to pay to park, - providing it's not going to be an extortionate "London fee"

What I object to is the lack of notification that this was going to happen and that it just turns up out of the blue as a fait accomplis rubber stamped by the Town Hall transport planning department.

I still don't know from what date the charges will officially start.

..and, unless I am mistaken, legally those new signs should be covered up at present and the old ones should still be in place to avoid any confusion or conflicting information.

..and there should be notification signs on local lamp posts and in local newspapers giving details and dates of this scheme so that people know what is going on.

I say that this should be done legally, but as we all know, those that we empower to make the rules turn out to be the best at breaking the rules themselves when it suits them.

You only have to look at any politicians expenses claims form to know that lol

Payment meter now in place at the point previously indicated

It's not switched on or working yet though, - and there is still no sign to say what the charges are going to be.

Perhaps next week it will cost me something. :(

To return to Then and Now, has anybody seen today's Guardian magazine. There's a nice little item of old photos held in front of the camera backed by a wider view of the same scene from the same spot. very effective. There's a gallery here.

I don't think so. I've seen this done before. It's become quite the thing to take iconic album sleeves etc and hold them up in front of their original locations.

It's as simple as:

Hold the photo up and line it up into the background. Then take the photo with the other hand.

I'll try to find the link to a website which has loads of them on.

I have just been down to Church St and taken one vox.

Are we going to have a go at doing some of these "then & Now, photo and background" shots ourselves?

If so there are 2 methods,-

1 vox's method

Hold the photo up with the right hand, camera in left, (or other way around) line it up with the background through the cameras viewfinder and take the picture

Advantages

Dead simple, no special camera, skill or computer software required

Disadvantages

May not be that easy to get a perfect line up.

Photographers hand must be in the shot.

Requires a small aperture and cosiderable depth of field due to distance range between photo and background.

2 SteveHB's method

Scan an old picture onto your computer, Download from your camera a bigger, new image taken from the same location. Use the new picture as background and the old as a non transparent floating layer in photo editing software.

Advantages

Infinate scope for adjusting the images, Can give a perfect fit with a bit of image altering

Disadvantages

Requires skill to use editing software.

Often easy to tell that it has been done in this way.

Requires both pictures to be taken from exact same viewpoint but done blind, - there is no direct visual alignment with the old picture at the time the new one is taken

Either way, using either method (both of them look good) are we going to give it a try?

It will give us a new way of presenting "Then & Now" pictures and may help revitalise this topic by giving it something "new"

Trouble is, to find out any important details, you have to phone up or go online

If you go online, their website is not very helpful either, no mention of any costs.

It looks very much to me like a council "tell them as little as possible before we sneak it in and see how many we can catch out and issue an even bigger fine / fixed penalty notice"

I am suprised that the phone number is a local 0114 number and not an 0900 premium rate £6 a minute rip off that they can make a killing on as well

In my opinion, charging like this will only drive shoppers away to other places making the bottom of the Moor and London Road areas even more of a run down ghost town than they are already, and making it even more difficult for businesses in that area to make a living and stay open.

It lists alternative, standard land-line numbers which avoid many 08, 09 etc premium rate call charges.

A lot of places use these numbers for so called customer support.

You buy something, it doesn't work properly so you ring them to find out what may be wrong.

So:

Just as much as saving the money myself, I take delight in knowing that the firm is not getting money for what's very often a service which should be free.

DaveH WILL readily pay to park his car, - it's not that that annoys me.

It's the scheming, underhand, deceitful way in which it has been implemented by the City Council.

There appears to be no legal notification, minimal details and just rushed in as a fait- accomplis before anyone has time to notice.

Then again, - thats councilors and politicians for you, - whatever their party.

No need to rename the topic Stuart, it is still a THEN and NOW.

THEN you could park your car in Sheffield for nowt.

NOW you have to pay summat for the privelige.

Believe me, in a few years time someone will post something on here called "Remember when you could drive into town and park your car on a street corner for free" lol
