This first image was taken January 1968 from the balcony of a first floor flat on Edward Street flats looking

down Upper Allen Street.

Upper Allen Street today.

Which one of you young wizards will put this together for me?

What I want to know is, Why have they blocked this road at this point? I used to drive down there every morning until a few months ago.

Just realised Sheffield Council found out it was a useful Rd. lol

Anyway, great cars on the Then photo :)

That's the Sheffield Council always making things more difficult for the driver.

I can't think of one good reason for doing this, just a waste of our money.

Changed the Now photo, still not 100% happy but almost there, at least you can see Norfolk Bridge now

Added a 1950's view to this Then & Now

I'm sure I have made the same comment about the BBC nicking our idea somewhere before in a previous post.

You are bidding on a used, good condition copy of 'Sheffield Old & New' by J Edward Vickers.

This is the revised 1985 edition.

ISBN 0 906787 02 5

Published by Applebaum Bookshop Ltd, Sheffield.

The book contains 34 old photographs and corresponding photographs of the same scene in 1985 (which are starting to look like historical photos in their own right!)

1 bid (me, but not fighting for it)

1 day left.

No need for any of us to bid then, because if Richard gets it I can guarantee that there will be 34 new postings of 1985 then & now pictures in this thread soon after he gets it and the rest of us will get to see the whole book for nowt.

Lets see Richard, 25 year copyright on old books, it was published in 1985, - that means you can have it on here by as early as next year for us all to see and no nasty legal problems either lol

They did it deliberately just to stop you driving down there.

It's a conspiracy Stuart, - Sheffield Council have got it in for us because we had the audacity to disagree with some of their policies and publically ridicule them on a well known local history web site. :o

A couple of Then & Now's

1 already posted in the University Tower Topic

Then date open to debate, I would suspect 1971/2 given that Tenter St bus garage has gone and the building work on the HSBC offices is about to commence

Now Stuart0742 September 2009

Then DaveH 1974

Not got a clue, part 1.

I'm dropping these couple of (recently purchased) postcards here in the forlorn hope someone can help identify the location and then someone ...

Stream, rocks, trees ...

from Jack to Miss B Johnson, The Poplars, Upperthorpe in October 1905

Attempts at transcription gratefully received; gets tricky down the bottom of the card (well it does for my eyes).

[i may have posted letters to/from Miss Johnson ages ago on here (could they be on the "I got this"-thread ?); if so, I bought those in the late 70's, the postcards I bought last week].

Not got a clue, part 2.

Second (recently purchased) postcard; here in the forlorn hope someone can help identify the location and then someone ...

Lane, junction, tree, bushes ...

from Sydney to Miss B Johnson, IOM, August 1907

Attempts at transcription gratefully received; should be easy.

Could be anywhere,

have you noticed the writing on the bottom of the view ?

The second word looks to read 'DERBY' but could be part of Derbyshire,

'Calver Derbyshire' just a guess.

Edit,

had another go and the second word looks to read Derbyshire

I agree Steve it looks like "Calver Derbyshire"

Well spotted

Hope you will like this view.

It is a lovely spot is it not

To me it seems idealistic of

perfect solitude & peace.

From the leafy grove of trees you

can almost hear the soft "forelude"

of the nightingale break forth,

while the gentle zephyrs woft

upon the ear, the low hymeneal

chanting of innumerable insects

What oh! I think

I've missed my

vocation,

don't you?

Kind regards

from Jack.

Edit: Sorry This applies to the part 1, one.

Do you think Jack had "lost the plot" or was it ever so romantic ... ?
