Shooting With Intent To Murder

Aug 1869

The Judge said..

"that in a case like this,

either one alternative or another must accrue,

either the prosecutor must die or she might get better"

It appears she survived, at least until the next assizes, as the charge remained shooting with intent to murder:

Sheffield Local Register

10 Jul 1869.

Disturbance among the colliers at the Manor.

Mrs. Sykes, wife of James Sykes, miner, shot with a

revolver. Thomas Davis tried at the assizes, Dec. 6,

for shooting with intent to murder. Guilty: seven

years' penal servitude.

My grandfather went to prison for attempted murder in 1945. His name was Harry Gower.

He stabbed my grandmother with an 8in knife and also hit her with a hammer. According to the newspaper report they had quarreled earlier about him going to the pub(he was apparently an alcoholic).

He said he didn't know what had come over him. One minute he was sitting in the armchair the next minute he had stabbed her. She spent a long time in hospital but did recover. However, some 2 yrs later she died of a strangulated hernia, the coroners report said it was due to the stabbing some 2yrs earlier. So he did, in fact, kill her :-s
