ukelele lady
:o Wiiliam Smedley 1875. William Smedley was a Sheffield knife maker, had been widowed several years earlier but had started living with an Elizabeth Firth as man and wife. At the end of August she told him she no longer wished to share his house on account of his poverty. He had been unable to work due to his failing eyesight. On the 31st August they were drinking in a pub together and at the end of the evening he walked her to her new home. When they reach the front door she refused to let him in. sending Smedley into a jealous rage.He drew out his razzer , grabbed her by the hair and cut her throat, so severely that he almost severed her head. Then he turned away and walked to the local police station where he gave himself up. He was hanged by Thomas Askern on the 21st December 1875 in Leeds. Funny what you find out when searching your ancesters, not my namesake but one of the inlaws, [or outlaw]. They say you should never search the family tree or one or two nuts could fall out. ;-)

RichardB
Facinating but harrowing images and which have disturbing echos in very recent events - nothing's new under the sun! The Male Bearded Lady I thought was rather unique (coming to you SOON) However, the Sheffield suicide attempt where the man attempting to hang himself told some boys who were standing by "Don't attempt to cut me down until I whistle !" is my current favourite
