Guest Gramps
Found this potted history of 'Norfolk Barracks' whilst looking for something else - http://www.drillhalls.org/Counties/Yorkshi...wnSheffield.htm There was often a 'show' of some kind going there when I was a lad. I remember going once with a pal of mine who was exhibiting his fancy mice, and I remember all the old gaffers with allotments showing off the veg and Chrissies. Do they still hold this kind of event there ?

SteveHB
The Edmund Road Drill Hall was also the home of the annual "Sheffield Ideal Homes Exhibition" in the '50s and early '60s. I remember going to one of those Exhibitions, also the flower shows that were held in the drill hall. If you peered round the screens and curtains there was lots of army display stuff in there, I can remember seeing field guns, army vehicals and also lots military flags hung up on the walls. Guest barbrook
I knew the Drill Hall during the 1960s. There was an annual crysanthenum show there, but the main non military event was at Christmas when Royal Mail took over the place as a sorting office. The Drill Hall was the home base of an artillery regiment in both world wars. During the Great War, the drill hall was used for a short period in the autumn of 1914 as a base for the Sheffield City Battalion.
DaveH
Not any more Gramps It's now used as a buisness complex. It has not been a business complex that long. As the photo shows, throughout the 1980's and 1990's up until about 2005 this building was the home of "Clark and Partners", they serviced and repaired cars, dealing mainly with insurance claims and damaged body work. they also specialised vehicle in security alarms and vehicles for the disabled from motability allowance, disable control modification to normal vehicles and even the little electric scooters and wheelchairs. It was animated every quarter hour.I can remember the toucan that sat on top of a pint of Guinness.I would love to see a photo of this clock. Guest Old Canny Street Kid
Yes Clarks moved out to Handsworth some years ago. Does anyone know what the building is being used for now? Many years ago, at the back end of the 19th century, Edmund Road Drill Hall was one of the venues used for the famous six-day go-as-you-please pedestrian events, with people like the famous Sheffield "ped" George Littlewood competing. That episode constitues a very interesting story --well worth taking the time to explore. There was an article about the Hall in an edition of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce magazine, Quality, in the early 1980s. Copies (bound) of this mag can be read in the Local Studies library. I have never heard of it, although I was born in Sheffield and have spent a fair amount of otherwise misspent youth at the drill Hall
Waterside Echo
Some more HN bollards, outside the Edmund Road Drill Hall, S2. It would be 1953. Sheffield`s scouts and cubs staged a pagent at the City Hall to celibrate the Coronation. We went to Edmund Road Drill Hall to rehearse a few times. How times have changed. We all made our way there under our own steam from Neepsend with just the company of a few more cubs. Not a parent in sight! Happy days. W/E. Guest PSM
Can you tell us more about this event, please Old Canny Street Kid? I have never heard of it, although I was born in Sheffield and have spent a fair amount of otherwise misspent youth at the drill Hall Between the 6th and the 11th of March 1882, George Littlewood suceeded in walking 531 miles in a 6-day heel-and-toe "classic" - thus beating the previous world record held by Charles A. Harriman of Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA, of 530 miles. That commendable effort was made at the Exposition Building, Chicago, between Monday, the 9th and Saturday, the 14th of May 1881. This world record still stands today! The full story of the race can be read in King of the Peds. www.kingofthepeds.com
