Stuart0742
I have a "Geographia" Plan of Sheffield 6inch to 1 mile This is in unmarked condition except has been folded for a number of years The problem is how old is it, I estimate late 1950's, it pre-dates Hyde Park and Park Hill flats. What I am looking for is somemore clues to what landmarks existed in the 1950's and not in the 1960's any suggestions. Would scan and post to the site except not sure at the moment about copyright. Guest tsavo
The original Odeon (Flat St) did not open till 1956. Is this shown?
Guest Gramps
I have a similar one, although mine is priced at 3/- paper and 6/- cloth, so it may be a little earlier than yours. The copy I have is falling to bits along the folds so not really scanning material.
RichardB
You should see the state of the Index map that I scanned ... literally fell to bits; obviously well used over the last 50 years If you want it scanned (and I think we all want that, don't we folks), I can do A3 and I know a man that is good at sticking bits of maps back together. There may be others closer to Sheffield willing to scan at A3.
Guest Gramps
Richard, I have two maps I'd happily let you have in return for scanned images. As you can see the CCD on my scanner is on its last legs, and I rarely use the maps for fear of them deteriorating further. PM me your address and I'll pop them in the post. Guest plain talker
Thes4e are from a 2 bob 4 bob version as the map number 1 shows the Manor and Arbourthorne as having been developed, it has to be "post-1935 ish, but Berners road and Errington roads are not connected, which happened when the prefabs were built, so it has to be pre "end-of WW II" Is an estimate of the 10 years between 1935 and 1945 a close enough window for youse? I have estimated my street plan at c1958,, Hyde Park & Park Hill flats are not built This street plan looks like it has been folded for the last 50 years, no real wear and tear, just 50 yr old creases. I am trying to reduce these then I will scan it. This is a photograph taken whilst it is blue-tacked to the wall. Also have the full Index to this
RichardB
I have creases like that and I'm not fifty. My knees hoever are 70+ rated, that's what you get for Triple-jumping in the stadium in Hillsborough Park.
SteveHB
This is a photograph taken whilst it is blue-tacked to the wall. I to remember having one of them things, it printed on maps and bits of paper things, It also worked on wallpaper. Seem to think it was called 'The John Bull Printing Kit'

Also have the full Index to this this one is certainly post-war, and a more modern edition than the other map on this thread which I estimated as being between 1935-45, as, in this map, the roads I commented on (berners road and Errington) in my previous post are now joined up, outside my parents' old house on Arbourthorne road. these roads were not connected until the prefabs were built, and errington Cresc and errington Avenue, which were prefab lined streets were not in existence then, but are shown on this later map. I have noticed that my old road, on Gleadless Valley is not shown, which was built in 1956/7/8, so the map must be 1956/7 or earlier.

As mentioned by Plain Talker, the Gleadless Valley and Herdings estates are going to be Key to dating this, was the Herdings estate built before the Gleadless Valley estate or are were they built as one. I beileve the Herdings estate was fractionally earlier than the rest of GV. (but not by much more than a couple of years) If I have my facts correct, the building of GV/H started at the Herdings/ Norton Water Tower side in the mid fifties, (My grandmother's house on Gaunt close was built in 56/7, and my parent's first maisonette. on Gaunt road was built in 58/9:- my father tells the tale of going into the army in the September/October of 58 and watching the farmer harvest the crops as he was preparing to set off. He then returned, on leave, about a year later, and the maisonettes were built) The building project progressed down the valley and up the other side toward Newfield Green, where the maisonettes on Sands close, where my aunt and uncle lived were completed around 1964. I was also interested to see that, on that map, Hurlfield Road continues on to connect with Gleadless road, where the "Toll Bar" estate is now. jiginc
Aren't these maps just great. Pointers for the age of these. No Hurlfield Secondary Schools the boys opened in 1955/6. Jaunty Lane at Intake the council estate is not built c 1954 No sign of the Hallamshire Out Patients Houspital mid to late 50's So pre 1954 if the map was upto date jiginc

Over to all you budding "Sherlock Holmes" out there, find a date for this 2nd map.

Kirkby Drive/Avenue/Way/View at Gleadless Townend were not built until 1954/5 Charnock Hall Junior School was opened in 1951 (this area not on SteveHB's map scan) Base Green Farm was demolished in 1952 (ditto) as part of the building of Base Green Estate.
