The theatre royal was built in 1773 across from the Lyceum, and was destroyed by fire in December 0f 1935. Had it survived it would have been Sheffields oldest theatre by a mile. Any more information anyone?

Around 1918 the Theatre Royal came under the same management as the Lyceum Theatre opposite with John Edward Barnes Beaumont as its Managing Director and John Hart as its Resident Manager. The company also ran the Grand Theatre in Leeds.

In December this year (2010) it is 75 years since the Theatre Royal in Tudor Street burnt down.It stood across from the Lyceum Theatre and the Crucible Theatre was built on land immediately adjacent. When the foundations were being dug for the Crucible in 1970, they found remains of the Theatre Royal cellars. On the facade above the entrance was a plaque of Shakespeare's head. Press reports following the fire stated that this would be saved. Does anyone know if it ever was, where it went and is it still in existence. Now that's a job for somebody!
