Guest BOXHAMMER Posted October 16, 2010 Share Posted October 16, 2010 I started to skate in the 1960s when i was a nipper , carried on through the 1970s and 1980s untill I started full time employment.....I loved it so much i used to travel three times a week from South Anston out towards Worksop.....I met my wife here and have been together for the last 31 years...scarey eh ? I loved the "Speed skating" bit where everyone went mad for 10 minutes to such tunes as Crazy little thing called love by Queen , Speed king by Deep Purple etc etc etc....I could never skate in " spaz boots " and still cant.....I tried at Nottingham last year....never mind ! ...I did not know that the old place is now shut , has it been demolished ? Also, I was in a Panto on ice and was dressed in green as an Elf - I have been trying to find out more info as after all this time I've forgotten all details! - have you had any more replies? Did anyone used to have skating lessons at Silverblades, tea times i think. Also can anyone remember panto shows on ice? my sister has slight memories of her self in them and she thinks been dressed in green as an elf! she wonders if anyone has any info or photo's??? Guest dingledong Posted January 18, 2012 Share Posted January 18, 2012 i remember going for lessons on a saturday morning, i used to have a lesson then the ice was cleared and the instructors each used to take a pupil on the ice for a dance, a fox trot or waltz. then it was cleared again for the speed skaters much more fun. i also remember going along at night a few years later when the ice used to melt quite frequently. the bus driver once asked us on the way home where we had been swimming we were soaked to the skin. happy days. Guest RICH NZ Posted September 17, 2012 Share Posted September 17, 2012 I used to go to Silver Blades one night a week from Matlock I think on a Wednesday around 1976-1978 I started work at 16 in Sheffield at the Vets on London Road in 1978-1979 & went Skating most nights originally in Bauer Huggers & later in a set of Lange TNTs I bought at the rink. The tunes for the speed skating was often the Hawaii 5 0 theme & I remember "Hi Ho the silver lining" being sung as "Hi Ho Sheffield Wednsday" regularly It was a great place for meeting girls & friends, getting served underage at the bar, playing the space invaders & pinball machines, Slush puppies & those awful burgers in the cafe. I lived for a short while in Hackenthorpe & used to bus in & out but later rented a room in Wilkinson Street & walked home through the hole in the road which was not a very safe place for a lone 16 year old late at night. When I was 17 & passed the driving test I was trying to be cool in an mustard coloured Austin 1300 which was not at all easy. I have many happy memories of good times with groups of friends. Do any of you remember me? My most memorable stunt was an accident. I don't know what happened but I woke up one night covered in blood in the rink office after colliding with the barrier head first. Apparently I was carted off the ice by the female Ice hockey team member/bouncer with the incredibly stunning long legs. Her ultra long denim clad legs were admired by most of us younger skaters as she paced around the speed skating session & sometimes gave you warnings about speeding in the normal skating time. Anyway I was off ito hospital in the ambulance for a night or 2 & a fair few stitches & back at the rink a couple of days later bandaged up but skating again. My mates could not believe I had been lying with my head in the leggy ones chest as she carted me off the ice & couldn't remember anything about it but I think she asked how I was & gave me a hard time about her blood stained shirt. Other memories of my time in Sheffield was the superb sandwich shop at the bottom of London Road where you could buy a whole Mixed grill in a sub, The "Wopentek" Heavy metal bar, Pie peas & relish which i miss & seems to be regarded as very odd here in New Zealand where I now live but I could go one just now. I have skated since in various places but not for over 10 years now, but I still own the Lange TNT skates I bought at the Silver Blades & will be going skating again at some point although it is not as popular here in NZ. I remember the blue hire boots that hurt your ankles.Songs at that time were, Status Quo - "Caroline " and Hey Mickey was played for the speed skating and I also remember True by Spandau Ballet for when the lights were dimmed and the couples skated around. I remember seeing The Move at the ice rink. They had to run the gauntlet from the stage to the dressing room through all the fans.... I think I managed to grab a handful of hair at one point!!!! Baldy67 Posted November 11, 2014 Share Posted November 11, 2014 The skating lessons were run by and here is a few names: Kathy Conroy, Rafe and Elanor Caldicot, Trevor Walcott and a big buxom blonde who's name I have forgot. The kids club that was run was the Penguin Club. Desy, my wife used to skate down there and seems to think the blonde lady's name was Irene. Remember it well, it was the first time visiting the Silver Blades not to skate but to see The Move and The Easybeats, Wednesday 7th June 1966 at a cost of 6/6d.There I was in a saffron coloured paisley patterned shift dress I'd made myself and a pair of saffron coloured shoes.... First time ever I'd been allowed to have something other than sensible black lace ups. Standing waiting at rinkside while the skaters finished before the groups came on, an excited girl bumped into me and her skates went over my shoes. 🙄 The lights went down, both groups were good, autograph book passed at the door, returned signed by both groups. It was a good night until I saw the shoes in the light, skate marks across the toes. They had to be dyed brown to hide the marks. Paul Worrall Posted November 2, 2022 Share Posted November 2, 2022 Hi Ponytail, Thanks for the posting. I had x2 albums of 'Lord Mayor' photos. They were in a box and nobody ever looked at them. Both my children said they didn't want them so I gave them to Sheffield Archive.
