Silver Blades Ice Rink

Another, previously unused, one of my 1974 shots of Sheffield.

That's Silver Blades in the foreground, with the City Centre as it was at the time in the background.

Picture taken in December 1974 from the junction of East Bank Road and Park Grange Road.

Hi There,

This is Ray Davies from the speed team. I know most of the names from the top list. I married Christine and we moved to Canada with our 3 boys in 1977.

We were back in Sheffield last summer and went to see Pete Key. Would be nice to see some of the other lads again.

Let me know.

Ray.

I used to go on a Friday evening around 1973/74. I hated the hire skates and soon bought my own figure skates. Used to love going

DH persuaded me to sell them a few years ago as we don't live near an ice rink now

We used to go on Wednesday afternoon from school, (instead of PE!) caught the 261 from Mosborough, spent an hour on the ice until the teacher went, then all disappeared into town for the rest of the afternoon!

Silver Blades has got a new "Stick on Side" and new posh entrance, they are also doing the same on the front.

But is it still a skating rink?

I was under the impression from something MrsH had said that it wasn't and that the building is now used for something else.

I think the ice skating rink was converted to a roller skating rink a couple of years ago when Ice Sheffield opened, not sure whats there now, except there is a lot of building work going on.

Roller skating, - that sounds familiar.

Challenge seems to be whats it used for now.

I seem to remember that there was a sort of night club with bouncers on the door and a room you could hire for functions at one time.

Sure I have been to a few "dos" there about 20 years ago, - while there was still an ice rink in fact.

It looks like the casino might be the main business nowadays

Does anyone else remember the building that used to stand where the Silver Blades was built ?

In the fifties the building was used as the T.B. clinic before it moved to Ellin Street. When an elderly neighbour contracted T.B. our family had to attend this clinic for X-Rays and tests. I remember it as a large ramshackle building situated low down in a hollow and surrounded by derelict gardens. I have a memory of a verandah and a lot of decaying woodwork. The building is shown as St. Elizabeth's Home on the 1905 O.S. map before it moved to East Bank. I've looked for a photo of this unusual looking building but so far with no results.

Thanks SteveHB, it's a pity that Picture Sheffield don't seem to have any photo's of what must have been quite an important building.

As I said in my post I seem to remember a crumbling verandah, and thinking about it they possibly put long-term patients outside when the weather was warm. I have seen somewhere references to patients stopping there long term. I can think of places with more fresh air !

Too far to the south I'm afraid, the pictures show the "second" St. Elizabeths.

HD

Where abouts was the second 'St. Elizabeth's' please,

it has me puzzled?

The 1905 OS map shows St Elizabeths Home at Queens Road/Duchess Road but later maps shows a bigger establishment with the same name at Heeley Bank Road/ Olive Grove. You can see the later establishment in the aerial photos in SteveB's post.

Yes, but they called the later place St. Elizabeths House not Home. Sorry about getting the posters mixed up.

My friends and I used to go at least twice a week in the 60,s. I remember on the 6/6/1966 every one was given a special coin with 6/6/66 printed .1 coin was printed incorrectly and whoever had it got I prize. Not any of us sadly.

It hardly ever cost us anything to get in as each time you went they used to give out free tickets for next time.

Many happy hours were spent there and many new friends and boyfriends were found.(a quick kiss and cuddle behind the stage)

One evening someone was shooting a film in Silverblades in the sixties and my friend and I were asked to walk through the ground floor coffee bar while they filmed us.We never did find out what the filming was for.

Good times :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Half of Mcewans in the bar, burger and a snog at the back of the stage.......... Happy days

Wow, Jill(was)Maloney(was)really into skating. I'm jealous. I used to go with a bunch of kids from the Hackenthorpe, we'd catch the bus on Friday or Saturday night but as far as I can remember we never went on the ice. We just used to walk around the rink (was it free to go in, pay to skate?) some people would walk clockwise and some people would walk anti-clockwise, there wasn't much room, it was fairly narrow, so every lap you would pass the same people walking around. You'd say 'ey up' to the ones you knew, nod at the ones you sort of knew and just look at the ones you didn't know. And they'd be playing Whiter Shade of Pale and Groovin' and San Fransisco etc etc Then we'd go upstairs and have a bottle of Coca-Cola or something. This was that innocent time between leaving school and being old enough to go in pubs and get your first motorbike so it was only one year or so. After that we were just getting smashed, one way or another.

Welcome to SheffieldHistory Jill(was)

Look forward to more Memories of Sheffield from you - post as you wish; ask questions, we can't guarantee an answer, but we'll give it our best on most subject areas.

I never quite managed the skating bit, though I enjoyed falling over on many a visit.
