Worked as a dj at least on one occasion at the Heartbeat and at least 4 years as resident dj at Samantha's.

I went under the name of Derek Dane.

Anyone else use to go there?

It was below the Silver Blades ice rink. We used to go to quite a lot. 10p Mondays at Samanthas where every drink was only 10p, and before that as a teen went to Heartbeat. I'm sorry but the only DJ's name I remember was "The Mighty Atom" who was as the name implies was of short stature.

It was on the top floor above the ice rink and on the ground floor was the bowling alley then the Alhambra.

The Heartbeats other main DJ was Steve Woolley who later became the manager.

Sam's also had Stuart,Irish,Kelly (shirley )Temple, Glenda

As Samantha's it was quite big on the Northern Soul all nighter scene.

the Heartbeat was the first licensed disco till 2am in the city. The second being the Penny Farthing.

yes it did get very busy, licensed for 250 people, but every fri and sat 650 plus in. sold Double Diamond beer in half pint mugs originally- one and eleven pence [10p] for half.

Ah - excellent

We've not covered the Minerva Tavern yet on the site so I'm sure you are going to come in very handy for details !

Do you have any pics of either place ?

Met my wife at the Heartbeat New Years Eve 1968.

She had tripped over the step on to the walkway adjacent to stage and dance floor on the way out to the toilets

My mate Stuart used to dj there and then John Vincent took over the northern soul nights before the all nightters started.

And for about six years I went to the nighters there. It used to be a regular routine Samms' on friday and then Wigan/ Cleethorpes on alternate saturdays.

Yes to work there with stuart real lad to get up to things. I was doing a gentlemens evening whe he was acting drunk and finished on the dance floor stripped with a stripper who tried to tie a ribbon around his watsit. The rest I am unable to publish.

Me and Stuart used to work at Sheaf Valley baths and when we used to pull at Sammy's we used to take them back there in the sauna suite he he
