All tried, tested and used by myself apart from number five.
Have fun.

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage
Free basic protection (for 'Windows') against viruses, spyware, adware and identity-theft.
AVG is one of most top rated free AV programs.

2/ OpenOffice.4.0.1
filesize 137 MB
(works on all common computers)
The leading open-source office software suite for word processing,
spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.
It stores all your data in an international open standard format
and can also read and write files from other common office software packages
including those of Microsoft Office.

3/ Audacity, Sound recorder
filesize, exe file, 2.1 MB
available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.
Record live audio.
Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
And more!
Basically "If it comes out of your speakers, then Audacity will record it"
very useful for recording internet radio and saving it for your own personal listening .. wink.gif

4/ IrfanView 4.37
filesize 1.477 MB
Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7.

IrfanView is a compact, easy to use image viewer.
More than that, you can also edit and resize images directly in IrfanView,
to produce a variety of effects,
so if your photos are to large (over 2MB) to upload onto SH forum
this program can shrink/resize them so they fit.
It will also enlarge small photos so they can be viewed more clearly on here.

5/ Active Pixels 3.05
filesize 7.0 MB
Win2000/XP/Vista

This photo editor resembles 'Adobe Photoshop' in many aspects.
It also includes similar tools, like the magic wand, the gradient,
the polygonal lasso and others. What's more, it supports working with layers
but it's not as powerful as 'photoshop'
So a useful bit of kit for those of you on here that want to edit photos/images
but don't have 'Photoshop' or the like.

Hope some are of use to you people on here.

Following up a request by RichardB ...

QUOTE "(RichardB @ Sep 17 2008, 07:33 PM)

"any chance of some destructions for people should they wish to download, open, edit a map/repost ? I hear we may not have the youngest and most "hip" of target audiences, interested yes, young, not ! The older the member, the more possibility of great memories/input."

While 'IrfanView' will do the above task, it first needs to have a 'plug-in' (add-on) downloaded and installed.

So to keep things as simple as possible,

I had a look round on the net and came across a free image editing program

that looks and is very advanced (much like 'Adobe' Photoshop).

But is quite easy to use for basic tasks like cropping (cutting a section from a photo) and saving a cut image.

Like this one ...

'Paint.net' 3.5.10 works on Windows XP (SP2 or later), Vista, 7.

Here are the System Requirements, Features, Screenshots

Download here and 'save' file to Desktop, close all windows then open folder and run setup.

Paint Net comes with a very extensive 'HELP' file,

So to simplify matters I have made up a basic tutorial on cropping and saving.

See my next post down.

This tut applied to the old forum board,

I am updating

A couple of members have been a little unsure about

how to add links to other web pages/sites into their posts or Topics.

This is normally done by using 'copy & paste'

Some distructions here.

1/ Open up the web page that you want to copy the 'Link' from,

2/ At the top of the page is the 'Address Bar' this is the bit that needs copying.

Here it is, at the top of the page ....

3/ Position your cursor over the text in the 'Address Bar' and right click once,

it should change color...

You can now copy this by holding down 'Ctrl' and pressing the letter 'C' on the key board.

(Ctrl = the Control key) or click on 'copy' if a box pops up.

You can now close or minimize that web page.
