POPPYCHRISTINA
Sorry to come back to this one but it is really getting my goat. Tsavo, have a look at this building. 178 London Road. It MUST have been built as a theatre or a cinema. I have asked in the local pubs but no one is old enough to know what it was.
Guest tsavo
Sorry to disappoint you PC, but unless someone knows differently, I will stick my neck out and say this has never been a theatre or cinema. There are quite a few old, long gone theatres and cinemas around the city, mostly West Bar area etc. but not on London Rd. I've been racking my brains to remember the building you photographed but if it's on the right hand side, (going up London Rd) I think this may be the old motorcycle sales room called Ropers. It was in the 50's the motorcycle place to visit. Will try and find a picture to compare. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to find this was a "lost" cinema or theatre, but I'm pretty sure it was neither of these. PS. love the bit about no-one in the pub being old enough to remember. Makes me feel like old man mose! PPS. just had a skulk around Picture Sheffield and if this is the building next to The Tramway, I think it was Cowan & Barrats, Plumbers Merchants in the 1960s. Would still love it to have been an old Theatre / Cinema though!
