Fitzalan Square

Ah, the 1890s. Them were the days when you couldn't put one foot in front of the other without stepping in horse-muck lol

Don't know how the women put up with it, - their skirts trailing on the ground as they did.

Here are a couple of photos of Fitzalan Sq

1899

1970's (nearer guess please)

pre 1973, as the buses are in the beautiful old blue-and-cream livery.

*goes back to scrutinise the pic more closely*

Yes in the corner between what was Wigfalls and The GPO building

This is the corner (1974), but in the wrong place to view those steps. However GPO building and Wigfalls clearly visible

Easiest question ever posted on this site

Who is this guy?

There must be one person who does not know

Yep - remembered where I saw the article - was on the 'other' Sheffield Forum - mentioend a couple of times. Looks like it was always breaking down - so thats probably the reason it was removed - certainly dont remember it when I was a kid back in the fifties - but on the other forum they do have some quite senior citizens posting so they may recall something if someone asks.

l spoke about this on the other forum, it was a service lift from the GPO garage at the side in Bakers hill to the floors of the GPO and Fitzalan square at one time, before the blitz Skeets.

It's the toilet attendant because he is stood on top of the public toilets!

So he has to go in the throne room

Ah, - that's a clue then, if he sits on the throne it must be the King

Could it be Edward VII by any chance?

I said it was easy, he has been there a few years.

Unfortunately there was not a prize, not like the great prize for finding 10 differences on the same photo.

Not even a day trip to Fitzallen Square?

So how long has his statue been there?

He was King from 1901 to 1910

His short reign was mainly due to the fact that his mother (Queen Victoria) had such a long reign that he was quite old when he finally got to be King in 1901, having spent most of his adult life as the Prince Regent to the the throne, - a bit like Prince Charles now!!

Fitzalan Sq looking down Haymarket

I remember the old Haymarket. At the back was the old open market. Also I remember an open shed which sold the livestock, rabbits, cats, puppys etc.
