Just about where the group are stood near the gas lamp, I remember the sign “ Hospital Quiet Please “ and I believe that in the 1900s and after straw was laid on West Street near the Hospital to cut down the noise from the steel rims on the carts that passed almost every minute.

I think that another way of keeping the noise of carts down was to have wooden setts in the road. Before they were covered in tarmac, it was possible to still see these on Eldon Street.
