I spent many happy hours in the pub itself when the pub was closed but, was banished upstairs during opening hours. All the family helped out by working behind the bar, cellar work, cleaning etc. There were some real characters such as big Ada and several colourful market traders but, there were also the solicitors from the nearby courthuse who also frequented the pub. Link to Sheffield Forum The only one we have on Harmer Lane is The Station Inn. In the Directory of Sheffield I've got 1889 Prince of Wales Flat Street Mary Payton, then it says also 38 Sycamore Street. Was she running two at once or is it the same? Does Flat Street run corner to corner with Harmer Lane?

Thanks UKL, Sycamore St corners Flat Street/Pond St, the high numbers on Sycamore St being nearest to the GPO with the even No's of Sycamore street running on the south side. So maybe the Prince of Wales was where the corner building stands .. No connections to Harmer Lane.

What other streets ran by Harmer Lane please ? Just Sheaf St & Pond St as far as I know, but after a re-read and think of the post on Sheffield forum .. Exclude the 'in' Harmer Lane in what is now Pond Street bus station used to be a street of old terraced houses and courts. According to the 19th century census returns, there used to be a pub there called The Prince of Wales. Anyone know about this old pub - when it was demolished etc? A picture would be great Any more thoughts, as to the location being Flat Street?

If the person raising the original question has found it in a Census then they should also have a name associated with the pub. Could have been The Station as a beerhouse ? a rename ? For instance on the 1850 OS map on Pond street only three pubs are shown between Pond Hill and Harmer lane - the Royal Oak, the Grapes and the Barrel from here, somewhere, Wilf Banks "Pub on every corner" I think but can't find it. ukelele lady
Sheldon 27-29 Hill Street I've searched for this pub from 1825 but found nothing in the books, maybe I should look on the census. The earliest I found other than the ones you already have are: 1883 William Christopher Greatorix 1888 George Marshall 1893 Frederick Froggott I wonder if it was under a different name in the early days?
