My Great Great Great Grandad died in this pub on 18 April 1885 of Apoplexy (stroke) certified by J H Warehouse. He was with his grandson, Harry Biggin of 84 Grange Crescent.

James Barber had owned racehorses and was described as "one of the richest men of the turf" but by the time of his death had lost all of this money.

The publican - Tattersall is also linked to the Barbers through Race Horses, though I have yet to investigate this.

The Rising Sun Inn on Abbey Lane and the Rising Sun in Little Common, Ecclesall Bierlow are listed separately, but they are the same pub. I think I have a couple of extra keepers to add:

1786 — Sampson Brookshaw, innkeeper (from the inscription on the charcoal burner's grave in Ecclesall Wood--assumed to be the Rising Sun Inn)

1822 — William Loukes, Vict. Rising Sun, Little Common (Baine's 1822)

1833 — William Loukes, Vict. Rising Sun & pocket knife manufacturer, Little Common, Ecclesall Bierlow (White's 1833)

1841 — Census. Little Common: William Loukes, age 65, Farmer & Pub (wife = Sarah, age 60; 3 children listed) — nb. Also on 1851 census at Park Head (retired Spring Knife Culter, age 76)

1841 — William Loukes, Rising sun, Ltl. cmn. Ecclesall (Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory 1841)

1849 — Thomas Ellis, Woodman and Vict. Rising Sun, Little Common, Ecclesall Bierlow (White's 1849)

1851 — Census. Little Common: James Ellis, age 40, Woodman (wife = Hannah, age 42; 6 children listed)

1852 — James Ellis, Woodman and vict. Rising Sun, Little Common, Ecclesall Bierlow (White's 1852)

1861 — Census. Little Common "Rising Sun Inn": George Thorpe, age 56, Scythe Grinder & Publican

1871 — Census. Little Common (Rising Sun): Hannah Thorpe, age 58, Innkeeper (2 children, 1 grandchild listed)

1881 — Census. Little Common (Rising Sun Inn): Hannah Thorpe, age 64, Inn-Keeper (Licensed Victualler)

1891 — Census. Little Common (Rising Sun): Judith Thorpe, age 32, Innkeeper

1893 — William Vinning, Vict, Rising Sun Inn, Little Common (Kelly's 1893)

1911 — Frederick Cockerham, vict. the rising sun, Abbey Lane, Parkhead (White's 1911)

1919 — Charles Wilfred Thompson, Vict. The Rising Sun, Abbey Lane, Parkhead (White's 1919)

Looking at a map in the archives dated 1890, I noticed there was a pub called The Old London Apprentice on Russell Street.

"This elegant early 19th Century house predates the canal. Once it was known as Parkside Cottage, and had a garden running down to a broad mill pond adjoining the River Don"

My great grandfather William Rutter was the licensee from 1912 to maybe 1918 as he died at a different address in 1919. My dad was born in 1916 and lived there for a while with his mum and grandparents as my grandad was away in the war.

Deleted "Abbey Lane" record, plonked the above into the Little Common Lane entry.

Thanks for the very comprehensive update.
