Has anyone heard of a pub called the Letters, 11 Eyre Street?

in 1830 the keeper was Matthew Robinson.

Pigotts 1822 directory says that Jonathan Williamson, a surgeon, was at 11 Eyre Street.

On 8th September 1829 Robert Atkin was granted a licence for 11 Eyre Street at the Brewster Sessions - but no pub name was mentioned.

By March 1832 Dr James Hallett was preparing and selling his Golden Anti-Venereal Pills from his Medical Dispensary at 11 Eyre Street. By 1836 he was at 77 Eyre Street and in 1841 he was at 2 Eyre street - so it's not clear if he moved premises , street numbering changed, or misprints were involved.

The 1833 Trade Directory states that 11 Eyre Street was the Ben Lomond Tavern, run by Robert A Smith.

Whites Directory for 1837 says that Hampshire and Hinsby (House Painters) were there.

Correction . . on looking back to this the name of the keeper is Richard Atkin Smith

in 1830.

Although Steve has Robert A Smith it could be one of the same or same family.

So I take it " Letters " could have been the Ben Lomond / City Arms.

I loved the photo of the Fitzallen (top Fitz) at 123 - 127 Fitzallen Street, Sheffield 3. This was my first ever local pub when I became 18 in 1965. The landlord then was Sidney Bough who ran it with his wife Amy, He had a son the same age as me and we used to go out drinking together. It didn't have a spirit licence. I went in the Army in 1966 and this pub disappeared when they pulled all the old houses down. Happy memories.

The Kelvin didnt close until 1961/2. The reason I know this is that my parents Raymond & Thelma Redfern were the licensees until it was demolished.

My GGG Grandad Jonathan Cotterill owned The Ladybower Inn, in the 1800's...my GG Grandad Willis drank and gambled the profits away and lost it in early 1900s!!

As part of some research I am doing I have been looking at the history of the Myrtle Inn on Alexandra Rd. I assume that this and the houses at the bottom end of Alexandra Rd were cleared as part of this scheme at some point between 1978-1981. I say this because the pub features in 2 episodes of the thirdseries "I didn't know you cared"! Im not 100% they used the interior but it looks pretty realistic.

Does anyone have any memories of the pub or its demolition they could share?

Yes 'imposter' filming of "I didn't know you cared" did take place inside the Myrtle, it was a pub that I frequented.

Sorry, can not help with demolition dates.

Walter Garrett (Walter Eels Garrett) is the publican in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
Possibly his wife Jane is listed in some years because of his ill health...

Interesting article about Walter Eels (his mother's maiden name) Garrett. I'd got two reports of his death, one that he had fallen overboard, the other that he had died onboard the trawler. His father was a taior and draper on Campo Lane.

Jane Eliza was related to me. Her grandfather Thomas Ouldfield (my G-Grandfather) kept the Burnt Tree on Allen St. Her sister kept the Three Tuns after her father died. Her other Grandfather Batrholomew Blenkiron was a "revenue man".

Her second husband Herbert David Moore died in 1908

Jane Eliza died in 1928 at Strood in Kent.

By all accounts, she was quite a formidable lady.

re "Farfield/Army Hotel/Owl/Muff Inn"
main entry: Farfield etc

The 1855 OS map (surveyed 1850/1) shows that Farfield House and the Army Hotel were different buildings, either side of the river:

1855 surveyed 1850-1 Army Hotel and Farfield House.JPG

In the 1851 census Farfield House was occupied by the Rev Henry Barlow, then perpetual curate for Christ Church Pitsmoor.

This excerpt from the report of the Brewster sessions in 1855 suggests that the Barlows moved out c1853 and the house became a Beerhouse. The application was for a spirits licence. No reason stated for the refusal.
