Hello

My Dad Kenneth Hall was born in Dronfield Woodhouse in the Heart of Oak cottage attached to the pub in 1925, he tells me that the landlord was then George Carnell, the original pub was at the road side and a new pub the one there today was built behind the original, the original was demolished in 1935 and George got a job at Stones brewery as a beer taster (lucky sod).

I would love to see a picture of the pub with cottage attached if there is one out there.

All the best Mick.

I'm struggling with this one; hopefully someone will come up with something.

The "open 1948" comment should be interpreted as "open in 1948 but that's only because that's the earliest (known, proveable) keeper we know of".

and that's a mouthful !

Hopefully we might find George Carnell now we have a name to look out for.

SHEFFIELD TOWN HALL

FRIDAY, – Before the Stipendiary

WILFUL DAMAGE BY AN INTENDED SON-IN-LAW,–

ALFRED SMITH, engraver, 97, Walkley street, was

charged with wilfully damaging a large number of

plants, the property of Mr. Mordecai Tim, publican, of

Burgoyne road, Walkley.– Mr. A.S.Binney appeared

to prosecute.– According to the evidence of the prose-

cutor, prisoner created a disturbance at his house, and

was turned out. Late the same night, however, he

made his way to prosecutor’s garden, and there tore up

about 50 plants. He also broke into the greenhouse, and

wilfully destroyed about 600 plants, the total damage done

being £15.– Prisoner admitted the charge but said he

should not have done it if the prosecutor had given up

a number of things which belonged to him (prisoner).–

The sister of the prisoner appeared and said he had

been courting the prosecutor’s daughter.– The Stipen-

diary: But people don’t do things like that when they

court the daughter. (Laughter) – The sister, who evi-

dently had no love for either the prosecutor or his

family, said prisoner was to have been married at

Easter, and also at Whitsuntide, but it was put off.

She also added, “He was a good lad before he knew

that thing there. They had ruined him.” – Mr.

Robinson (deposition clerk): What happened between

them to cause the disturbance? – The sister: I don’t

know, something about him staying out all night,–

The daughter of the prosecutor, who was engaged to the

prisoner, admitted that there was some furniture

that belonged to the prisoner, – After a private con-

versation between the parties, prosecutor promised to

give up the furniture.– The Stipendiary thereupon

ordered the prisoner to pay the amount of the

damage, or to go to gaol for 14 days.

Sheffield Daily Independent

Damages £15 and a fine of £2

The prisoner said he would do the 14 days and was removed into custody

I can't seem to find this one anywhere on the A to Z but it could be staring me in the face.

The nearest address I've found to it is 66 Fargate , Fleur -de-lys but it used to be 58 so did

the Fleur-de- Lys used to be the London & Birmingham Hotel?

Struggling to find him in either 1861 or 1871 Census, might have passed away before 1871 but unlikely to be running a boozer aged 3 in 1861 ... anyone else find him please ?

Here's a bottle dug up from Conisborough area that once belonged to the

Friendship Hotel at Stocksbridge.

I wonder what this small bottle would have held?

I can't think it would have held more than half a pint of what ever.

Has anyone heard of the pub " Lane End " at Gleadless?

It was printed in the Whites directory 1833 with the landlord being William Booth.

Lane End is the name of the area of Gleadless around the junction of Hollinsend Road and Gleadless Common. There was a pub in this area in the 19th century called the Hare & Hounds, which was replaced by the New Inn around 1870.

I wonder if the Hare & Hounds is what is being referred to in the Whites directory?

Maybe, they seem to have printed the address but not the pub.
