From the 1881 Pawson & Brailsford Map:

Very tiny, but you can just make out Wellington Lane running parallel to Wellington Street. It looks to be what is now called Chester Lane.

Thanks Jeremy, I wonder if it still exists?

Some of the little back streets in that area are still there.

Is it possible that the first one is what we have listed as the Barrel

Scratch that… The Barrel is also in Robson's.

On my Robson's 1839 I have two Bridge Inns one at Bridgehouses [ J. Pearson]

and the other at Iron Bridge [ John France]

Does anyone know where this could be?

Definitely something odd here. We have:

Bridge Inn, 1 Bridgehouses

Bridge Inn, 5 Bridge Street

Bridge Inn (or Bridgehouse Inn), 181 Nursery Street

If these aren't all be the same pub, we have definitely got them mixed up in some of entries.

1 Iron Bridge might have been on the south side of the river:

1833 (White's) James Shaw, vict. Bridge Inn, Iron Bridge

1837 (White's) John Francis, victualler, Bridge Inn, Iron Bridge

1839 (Robson's) John France, Bridge Inn, 1 Iron Bridge

Hi Jeremy

No I've never had a problem before with Google on this site.

I've tried all the things you mentioned and I don't have a problem anymore on the A to E site since

I deleted your Google post but what's the eye/no entry private report sign at the bottom of the screen?

I've not seen that before, never mind I'll plod on regardless.

Sometimes these things come and go at will. I can now reply to your posts.

Regards UL

Hi Jeremy

Another thing I don't understand is I have just replied to your P.M and I would have thought

the message would have gone to your P.M box not printed on this site????? :o

I believe the Iron Bridge and Bridgehouses are one of the same.

Looking at my Directory of Sheffield 1833 they have got James Shaw's address at the Bridge as

Bridgehouses and also in the 1834 Pigot's James Shaw's address as Bridge ,Bridgehouses.

which is classing yours [Whites ] and mine [ Directory of Sheffield] as one of the same

Do you think they should merge?

Do you think the Broomhall Tavern is the same as Broomhall house post 374?

Could someone check the 1856 as I've got E. Hollinsworth in the Directory of Sheffield

and it's J Hodkinson on the list but different books have been known to have different landlords.

Elias in 1854, Jane in 1856.

Pigots 1841 Ball Wellington Lane Abel Kent

Where is Wellington Lane? Could it be what we now call Wellington Street?

I've solved the problem of Abel Kent at the Ball , Wellington Lane

he's also down at The Ball, 86 Carver Street in 1841 in Whites book.

It must have been on a corner as usual. lol

Built to coincide with the building of the New Barracks no doubt.

If you have a Landlord for 1871 you're one up on us. Can you supply a name please and we will check it out, he/she then goes on the list.

I'm looking for a Red Lion Tinsley, any ideas or is this a new one

1833 Red Lion Tinsley Jonathon Welby

1833 Board Broomhead Mill Ellis Jackson

Also 1876 Acorn Inn Walkley Lane. Mrs Alice Thompson.

I found this same name at the Acorn on Shalesmoor, coincidence?

Although in 1887.

1833 Red Lion Tinsley Jonathon Welby - can't say I've heard of it or indeed him

1833 Board Broomhead Mill Ellis Jackson - don't know where this was; there is a Board, Hill Top, Attercliffe - Sarah Simpson (1833)

Also 1876 Acorn Inn Walkley Lane. Mrs Alice Thompson.

I found this same name at the Acorn on Shalesmoor, coincidence?

Although in 1887. - Acorn on Shalesmoor Charles Thompson 1871, 1879 and 1881 - probably Widow or daughter.

Elias in 1854, Jane in 1856.

I meant the surnames Richard.

1856 The Barrel, Charles Street I've got E. Hollinsworth but the A to Z says J. Hodkinson.

Do we keep them both? Mine was taken from the General Directory of Sheffield.

Suggest keeping both e.g. Fred Bloggs/Mrs Miggins could be any number of reasons ... are you aware of the Landlord rotations that went on ?

The book I got this from suggests it's somewhere at Bradfield, maybe near

where the Broomhead Hall was.
