Another 1787 link from Mather's Songs (Google books), page 42:

This song satirises the "Host" of the Boar, (now the Blue Pig,) Spring street. On the sign was painted a large picture of the above-named animal, to which Mather compares Mr. John Hawke, the landlord. John stood on little ceremony when his customers were drank, bat "He tumbled them neck and heels out, when with swillings their bellies were full."

Gales and Martin (1787) has:

John HAWKE, victualler, Spring Street

1871 Census

Acorn Inn Joseph Swift Publican

Woodman Yd, Young Street.

Joseph Swift known before this date :

Gate, Penistone Road North, Wadsley Bridge (1854, 1856 and 1861)

however, in 1871, we already have the following :

Ball Inn, 182 Young Street, Joseph Swift (Beerhouse)

I'll update the Ball main record (my record seems more up to date than the main record - must do better ...) with a link to your image. [Difficult to read, not your problem, could it just be my eyes ?]

Thank you.

If you look at the top right hand corner of this 1851 map

you will see the Corporation Arms on Middlewood Road.

It is in the exact spot of the now Middlewood Tavern.
