The only one I'm sure of as my ancestor is the Earl Grey from the 1901 Census - all the details match. I'm fairly sure the Bull's Head is correct as there is family tradition to support it but these other 3 are new to me so this gives me something to research. Thx again. Fizz Just checked the 1911 Census and the Herbert Naylor at the Park Hotel is my ancestor - correct family and DOB. So once again, thx. ukelele lady
Help I think I'm going blind. I can't find The Castle [Wine Vaults ] 3 Castle Street. Is it under some other name I wonder. I've looked through Old and Wine Vaults but can't find anything near it. In the books from 1879 to 1903 it's down as just Castle Wine Vaults , 3 Castle Street. I can't believe we haven't got that one, must have another look. B)

I reconize some of the names, It's listed as Castle at least up to 1903 Mr Henry Beaumont. I'll look at Cannon after that date, ....back to the drawing board. ;-)
ukelele lady
Does anyone know if there were two Bridge Inns on London Road? We have one with the address as 1 London Road and the other as 509 London Road. There's a picture on both posts but it looks like the same pub to me. Photos never lie UKL, the pub was rebuilt about 1936, however it would be interesting to find out where the number 1 London Road comes into it. By the way, White's 1901 directory has the River Porter running under Heeley Road Bridge near the junction of London Rd/Gleadless Rd..

I have number 1 London Road in the Whites 1876 book but I've now combined the two. I would like that slot to put a new one in but it would mean me deleting the pictures. could they be transfered to number 509?

I don't know if there's a "proper" way to do it UkeLass, but you could always copy the pictures to your computer then re-post them where you want them to be. ukelele lady
Does anyone know the geography of the Crown , 2 Victoria Road? Would it be the same as the Crown , 2 Albert Road? they are both down as Heeley. Did Albert Road used to be called Victoria Road or is Victoria Road somewhere else? There's also a entry giving the address as Norton Road, I'm lost

There's also a entry giving the address as Norton Road, I'm lost Confusing UKL. The Victoria Rd. in Heeley, was later re-named Shirebrook Road, and runs/joins into Albert Road. The Crown Inn, Albert Rd, was on't junction of London Rd / Chesterfield Rd. was at one time next to the Derbyshire boundary, so the name Norton Road as opposed to Chesterfield Rd. or London Rd sounds probable. Shirebrook Rd. & Albert Rd.

SteveHB
Thanks Steve, so there is a possibility of it being the same pub. maybe, maybe not? If the documentation states Crown Inn 'Heeley' then I would say that they are the same Pub, I'm not 100% with the Norton Road bit, unless it states Heeley. ukelele lady
Just a thought Richard but do you think The Don House Infirmary Road is meant to be The Don Penistone Road? They both have Robert Bateman down in 1871 and I don't think there was a Don House on Infirmary Road but I can check on that.

They both have Robert Bateman down in 1871 and I don't think there was a Don House on Infirmary Road but I can check on that. Here's the location of the Don House Infirmary Road . So now to decide which pub Robert Bateman was in 1871 was it Don House Infirmary Road or the Don Penistone Road. What did it say on the census? In Douglas Lambs book it states " the location of the New Inn Penistone Road and the Don House Infirmary Road are unknown. " Well we all know where the New Inn was [ my dad did, he was never out of the place ] And now we know where the Don House was.
ukelele lady
Included this information on the Crown & Anchor Fitzwilliam Street / Bright Street as not to get confused with Bright Street Attercliffe. Bright Street was the continuation of Fitzwilliam Street in about 1832. Bright Street lost it's name in mid 1800s when Fitzwilliam Street took it on. Bright Street would have been about where Fitzwillam Gate is now.

ukelele lady
What shall we do with the Ball 28 Townhead Street.? It has all the same names as the Golden Ball 10 Townhead Street & Campo Lane. I've not come across a number 28 on my data. I think they are one of the same. I've just spotted it because I've just posted these to the A to Z. The Golden Ball 10 Townhead Street & Campo Lane. 1876 , 79, Thomas Shaw 1887, 89, Henry Blanchard 1893 Thomas Hawksley PS Also it has 1881 Thomas Shaw and the address as 6 Townhead Street which it was before changing to 10.
