15th January 1878 :

A man named Michael Bush was charged with assaulting Mrs Perkins; the landlady of the Bay Horse Hotel, West Bar. Mr Pierson defended.

The defendant went to the house, asked for a glass of whisky, and flung down in payment what he afterwards declared was a half-crown, but which the landlady and the waiter swore was only a two-shilling piece.

He was supplied with the drink and then began to make a row because he had only got change out of a florin.

The landlady took him to the till and showed him that, although there were several pounds of silver in it, not a single half-crown was there, the defendant became enraged, and knocked the landlady against the door. This was the assault complained of, and the Bench finding it proved, fined Bush 40s. and costs, or two months imprisonment.
