The Blackamoors Head/Grey Horse the High St, I will be doing a W.T.E.T. of this old pub in the RETRO in a week or so and I wonder if anyone could help me with this letter "U" over one of the upper windows ,when I took the picture I was chatting to a chap I worked with so I didn't look at the photo until I put it in my P.C., it was then I noticed the letter, it could be that there may be different letters on the other upper windows, a re-visit is planned for Monday with my S.L.R. but in the meantime why the letter "U"? its not a horse shoe I can see that.

This from Wikipedia :

The Crosspool Tavern (469 Manchester Rd.).

The first Crosspool Tavern had originally been Mr. Joseph Sarson's cottage and workshop. He died shortly after its conversion to a tavern in 1824. The property remained in the family for over 100 year's, and Joseph's widow ran the premises until the mid 1870s.

It became a meeting place for the district and had its own skittle alley.

The tavern was totally rebuilt in 1930 and the last member of the Sarson family to run it retired in 1935, having held the license for 40 years.

A correction to the Wikipedia information:

Joseph Sarson didn't die until the first quarter of 1843. In 1838 he got off a charge of allowing card playing on Christmas Day:

And he was on the 1841 census, carrying on the trade of scale presser, the beer-house a secondary occupation?:

Thank you Edmund. Can't help thinking that 1871-1932 is one heck of a big gap that requires attention at some point.

William Sarson, Beerhouse, Crosspool, 1864-65 Burgess Rolls.

Does nothing to close the big gap, but maybe suggests William, might be a relative "chipping-in" before moving on to other work ?? Needs 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census work methinks.

Right-o here goes:

see this : Sheff History Crosspool Tavern see post 90

1851 - Sarah Sarson (son William there):

1861 - Sarah Sarson (son William there):

1871 - Sarah Sarson (no William):

Sarah Sarson died aged 89 on 21st November 1873. Her daughter Ann (b1825) married William Chappell

In 1880 Sarah's grand-daughter (via Ann), Lucy Alice Chappell re-married to Samuel Lovell (also a widower), they were running the pub in 1881:

Sam and Lucy still there in 1891:

By 1911 Sam Lovell had moved to the Plough, he died on 12th February 1927, still at the Plough, leaving £1458 15s 5d.

In 1935 - the final grand-daughter of Joseph and Sarah, sister of Lucy Alice, a Mrs Sarah Ann Ellis (b 1856 daughter of Ann Chappell) retired from the pub and the continuity finished. Mrs Ellis had held the licence for forty years. She had been married to George Ellis, named as landlord in White's directory 1911 and Kelly's in 1925. A third sister (not sure which) had previous to Sarah Ann Ellis held the licence for three years.

I worked in the kitchens at the Tavern from 1974 - 1977, it was run by Pete and Barbara Merry when I started and when I left Ray ? and his wife - he used to do the flower arrangements and his wife used to shift the barrels about. I'm sure it's not related but:

Crosspool Tavern Pub News - 01/9/2006
"The Crosspool Tavern pub and restaurant on Manchester Road was fined £5,000 in August after Sheffield City Council health protection officers took legal action over its dirty kitchens. The pub's owner, Mitchells and Butler Retail Ltd, pleaded guilty at Sheffield Magistrates' Court to the charges. The pub's manager and kitchen staff have been now all been replaced"

I've searched high and low for this Bull's Head Inn , South Street and thinking it may go under a different name.

Any ideas or have I missed it?

Thanks Steve , just checked the Bulls Head 2 Duke Street on the A to Z and Horatio W Jeffcock

was there 1859 to 1863 .

It most likely had two addresses as they seem to do if they were on a corner.

The A-Z of pubs was based on information up to the year 1950, but we will add these to the list.

Thank you for the update.
