Slightly off-topic but the Council announced today that the new market was now over-subscribed, but they hadn't closed applications as they wanted to provide a good mix of traders.

That was the biggest lie ever to be inflicted on the citizens of Sheffield  many stalls are still empty ,I know one bloke that actually broke down in tears ,the reason he was refused a stall because he did not know how to forward a business plan.

A business plan to run a Market stall I ask you.

Once again radio Sheffield is asking why the Moor market is failing .

The answer is obvious to all but the Sheffield Council planners ,it is in the wrong part of Town ,put there to take trade to the Moor at the expense of the traditional Market areas around Exchange Street, The very name speaks volumes.

The market is somewhat in the background of this shot (which I bought as a photo of the trams).

It is from March 1960 and shows the new market under construction

Never really noticed this before but looks like the architects/designers of Sheffield's Castle Market included some swastika's

One of the entrances to Castle Market was down a ramp, which had a pair of large glass doors.  When I was about 10 or 11, a small boy ran down the ramp and slammed into the glass doors, injuring himself quite badly.  Immediately after that, the doors had big red shapes painted on them to make it obvious there was a barrier there, rather than an open space.

Re: The picture of Woolies above, just inside, behind the front windows, they had a donut making machine - imaginatively named Donut Robot - which fascinated me as a nipper.  Never did like donuts, though.

On the top floor of the adjacent building…(was it occupied by SCWW?) I seem to recall going to a dinner in a restaurant . I wonder does anyone recall the place?

The Market Hall ,when first opened ,was a wonderful place at a time when market shopping was quite the norm but, sadly, it’s fortunes went down and it became a bit of a sad place!

Yes, I remember going into a very large room, not sure if it was Yorkshire Water Authority or "SCWW" at the time, I went to a meeting regarding, either the opening, or issues concerning the River Don or The River Don 5 Weirs Walk trust, not sure what year it was?
