Shude Lane......

Hi there folks, could anyone possibly tell me if I'm right on this one please. I'm looking at the 1871 census for head of household, William Bancroft. (His daughter Eliza is my Great Great Grandmother, she married Henry Rolley.) The address is Shude Lane, Forge Yard, Sheffield. I've found Shude Hill and what was Ponds Forge on google maps and on the 1800s map I've found Shude Hill and The Ponds. So, on the 1800s map, would one of the little side streets off Shude Hill be Shude Lane? Also, on Eliza Bancrofts birth certificate, the address is given as Forge Yard, Forge Lane. Sub-district of South Sheffield. Is this roughly all the same place? Thanks for any info or verification. Doris..

Thanks, thats all very helpful. I can do a bit more now, I would hate to write up my family history and not have everything pretty much correct. What would I do with you Sheffielders and the internet!!!!

By the way, is that right, are you called Sheffielders? I'm from Pocklington (East Yorkshire) and we get called Pocklingtonions!!!!

Thanks again for the info, much appreciated.

I'm happy with "Sheffielders", much prefer it to "Dee Dahs", which is what we're called by much of South Yorkshire! ( Dee = Thee=You, Dah=Thou=You. It's supposed to be the way they're pronounced in broad Sheffield). Thee and Thou used to be widely used in local speech. There's a local admonition, often to a young person who's spoken to an older one, "Thee Thou them 'as thou's thee". = "You only address a person as Thou if they address you as Thou". Otherwise you were being over familiar. A bit like Tu and Vous perhaps?

(I shouldn't worry about the 'onions' tag, one of our number was brought up at Lodge Moor, and refers to himself as a 'Lodge Moron'! )

Looking through the 1833 Whites directory,

there are references to a Forge Lane in the area of Shude Hill and Pond Forge.

In post #01,

Decky Doris asked about 'Forge Yard, Forge Lane. Sub-district of South Sheffield'

So would anyone know if Shude Hill and the Pond area

would have been classed as a 'Sub-district of South Sheffield'?

A little late with this. But in 1959 I started work as an apprentice at Marsh Bros. They were on Shude Lane(rh side looking at the maps - in the area where 'lane ' is printed. The works were the Pond Works At that time they were cutting tool manufactures. However they had been in existance 300+ years and had been involved in several manufacturing area in their time. Just before their eventual demise they moved to Randel Street before being swallowed up by Brooke tools. (moved from Shude Lane to make way for the Swimming baths that now occupy that area)

Thanks for the Map Steve I I enjoyed looking a the plan of Marsh Brothers (even the outside toilets are on the {the tiny rectangles to the 'south' of the premises }

I can 'see' every inch of the place even now.

Marshes was steeped in history (old directors desks with envelope having Penny Black stamps on them - on the unused upper floor -Patents with enormous seals attached to them )(I believe they were given to Sheffield Museum)

HAPPY DAYS - E$ven if we had to work a 45 hour week

Every contribution welcome Johno, 4 years, 40 years, 400 years it's all received and appreciated - some of it causes meltdown amongst us "old hands" and some fires off research we didn't know we wanted to do - so keep the leads flowing please everyone.

Oh and Thank you.

The question was raised where Forge Lane was in the Pond Street area.

Thanks to Archives and Local Studies who are digitilising maps making them available on line through the Picture Sheffield website, thought this may prove helpful. Part of Shude Hill is also marked.

Please note the spelling is as it is on the map.
