DaveH
I used to live at 89 Wallace Road, Parkwood Springs opposite the Methodist church. I am now 51 and have fond memories of my time there does any one have any photos or memories to share ? Welcome Paulie and Brimstone as you both seem to be fairly new members. The north side of town is not an area I am very familiar with and I always thought that Parkwood Springs was an industrial area rather than residential, so I would have expected to find a few steel works on Wallace Road rather than people living there. If I am right the area you are talking about is between Penistone Road and the area of Shirecliffe where the ski village is / was. I have posted many photographs of Sheffield on this site which I took in December 1974 and I have 2, neither of which have been posted previously, which I think may be (roughly) the area you are talking about. As I have said, I am no expert on this area of town so let me know if these pictures are the area you were looking for (and if they're not, can anyone give me a positive identification please?) From your post paulie you would have been about 16 when these pictures were taken.
DaveH
Here's a couple from the set of 1974 pictures which I have posted before (sorry). They are of the old Sheffield Rolling Mills. I think the area immediately behind these works is Parkwood springs ...or is it neepsend first and then Parkwood springs? ...or is Parkwood springs further up away from town? neddy
DaveH said: That's why we couldn't get the first one, its not on Penistone Road its on Stannington Road looking across Rivelin Valley. Sorry, - I do find north Sheffield confusing, mainly because I don't go up there very often. Must start to get out more often again like I used to. (..and thats what my doctor advised as well) So does the second picture (edging my best bet) show Parkwood Springs? Second picture show's Parkwood Springs looks like around 1975ish as the Springs were being demolished, Fieldhouses scrapyard in the foreground with the coal drops on the tip just behind, just shows how much stuff was taken out and re-tipped you can just make out the backs of the coal drops. Top of the hillside on the left Shirecliffe college now gone, with the dark mark below being the Parkwood Allotments, and below them the small white building the Ganister pit Right hand side the recreation ground top of Pickering Road the two white buildings below were pigeon lofts, on the same level was Wallace Road

jmdee
I think both these are taken just to the left side of what used to be Wood St. The building marked, Sheffield Rolling Mills used to be Andrews Toledo steelworks. The road across the bottom of the picture, partly hidden by the advertising billboards is Penistone Rd. The bridge is Hillfoot bridge, which leads on to Neepsend Lane. The Farfield pub is just to the left across the bridge. Here's a couple from the set of 1974 pictures which I have posted before (sorry). They are of the old Sheffield Rolling Mills. Exact date is December 1974 So it is Parkwood Springs down there then, - hope paulie and brimstone recognise it.

Yes I used Langsett Road (in the days when it was open all the way from town to Hillsborough) in preference to Penistone Road as it was more scenic being that bit higher up the hill out of the Don valley, so the first road across the shot will be Penistone Road which ran almost parallel to Langsett Road which I would have used as the viewpoint. Beyond Penistone Road would be the River Don, again with the road running parrallel to it, hence the bridges. On the other side of the river is the area which I am not too familiar with. At least for this one I know where I was when I took it.

Waterside Echo
Newspaper clipping Will Mathers Sketchbook, he did it so well. Douglas Terrace! [`neddy should be able to put me right on this]. I can only go back to about 1948ish but I cannot ever remember the building on the left hand corner of the terrace being a pub, it was a beer off. I think this building is being confused with the Douglas Hotel a bit higher up on the corner of Mount Road. Incidentally, Keith H one of the best football referee`s of his era was brought up on Douglas Terrace. W/E.

It was a beer off and grocers Beeson then McShane but I don't think McShane's sold beer, I think it was being confused with the Douglas Inn. The property on the other corner used to be a shop as well but the window was bricked up and turned into a house.

DaveH
Link to Map 31 I think the arrows show the viewpoints So we should be OK for someone to try and "then and now" these shots then if we know where they were taken from. That assumes of course that modern day developments haven't made the now shot an impossibility.
DaveH
Excellent use of "Das Maps" - sorry, watching a programme on TV about the Nazis ... Was it "Das Boot"? (the boat, a film about a German submarine) One of the best films about WW2 made and it was made by the Germans and in German. The story (probably true) is so gripping that even without the English subtitles you don't really notice its in German and can understand it perfectly. A brilliant film, but anyway, we digress from the topic of Parkwood Springs.

DaveH
A few to many trees and bushes these days. Seems to be a common problem with trees and bushes. Gramps said something about the "verte" or "verdigris" somewhere in another thread, something to do with too much green. Don't the council parks department bother keeping their growth in check any more? I seem to remember even 40 years ago Sheffield had plenty of greenery but it was all nice and tidy due to regular trimming.

Its one of my pet hates, overgrown trees and bushes, I sure there is a rant somewhere on this site on this subject
DaveH
Its one of my pet hates, overgrown trees and bushes, I sure there is a rant somewhere on this site on this subject Yes the rant is the one where Gramps used verte and verdigris for green bushes and green rooftops respectively and we all moaned about how there was too much green in the way. We had a good rant about it, we may even have borrowed the rant soapbox from vox's shed and put it back afterwards. In fact you and me were the main ranters I wonder if they would like to sign us up for the next series of "grumpy old men"? (known by an alternative title in our house, not repeatable here)

DaveH
Thanks neddy, It seems that my chance taking of those 2 pictures of Parkwood Springs came at a very opportune time. When they were taken in late 1974 this clearance and redevelopment would have been well under way.
