Think they were to stop people messing about in the lifts rather than make the shop look/feel posh.

I seem to remember they were not that friendly either.

I seem to remember the lift attendents always being old woman that sat on stools asking what floor you wanted and pressing the buttons

But I do remember going to the Whimpy at lunch time, this was also in Fargate it had an upstairs seeting area which was on the same side as Chelsea Girl and Jeanery, at a guess the Whimpey would have been where the Orange Phone shop is now, but that is only a guess, and I have slept since then!!!

:P:P

Bring back WHIMPY :<img src=:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> :<img src=:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> It was much better than Burgerking and Mc donalds

As a youngster in the early 80's I remember being invited to a Wimpy party that was held at the Fargate Wimpy in the upstairs part.

Nope Wimpy was across from that shop that sells 2nd hand mobiles etc. Last block of shops on Pinstone st at bottom of Cambridge st.

You used to have to pay at the exit after you'd eaten, once we got to the counter and no one was there so we just walked out and legged it up Cambridge sT and hid in Coles. Was only about 11 or 12 i think.

In the early 60s the Wimpy Bar in Fargate was just below the Davy's / W H Smith shops. An earlier cafe was Marsdens (think that's the correct name) which was just to the Moor side of the Maplin store on Pinstone Street. Seem to remember you could get a burger there, but not as good as Wimpy's! A Wimpy + a Milky coffee =d heaven in the days when my taste buds still worked.

Wimpy's was the only establishment you could get something to eat after 2.00am when the Top Rank or Crazy Daisy kicked out. The only other option was "Vera's" buttie van that was paked on Corporation Street.

I know where you mean - it was next door to Just Halal kebab shop for many years, on the corner?

Brown sign, but just can't picture the name! It closed down quite a few years ago now, I believe.

and across the road from that, coming back into town, from West Bar (he says, approaching his question like a hunter on the Serengeti Plains), there was a curry house (Shalimar ???), a second hand/junk shop, lots of electronics, a second-hand car showroom, with the remnants of the end of Workhouse Lasne, and back in the sixties/seventies, opposite the Gun/Fishermans shop a really quite impressive building, bottom of Snig Hill, where the Pack House Inn used to be (way back when, use Picture Sheffield and search on Snig Hill, Pack House is a big place directly opposite the bottom) ..... so what was that building please ? Picture appreciated, as always...

Guest BIG D

I used to meet Mrs BIG D in town on Fridays after I'd finished work at Thos W Wards and she was on her way home from Stannington College. We often had our tea at The Golden Egg at the top of Fargate (no expense spared eh?). I think it used to be where the Dixons was just down from Orchard Square.

I remember The Golden Egg, as you say a quality establishment :)

Well, there is a map.

Key :

1) Curry House (possibly called Shalimar ??), right on the roundabout

2) Second-hand/electroics shop

3) Car showroom, I think a bit of the end of workhouse lane used to remain, leading onto West Bar

4) Mystery building (the Pack Horse public house used to stand here - 100 years ago, I'm looking for a 3 or four story, round fronted building, that used to stand here in the Sixties/Seventies

5) and/or 5a) Was there a small pub here called The White Hart ??

6) Turners Gun/Fishing etc shop

(Diagram as correct in 1990)

No mention has been made as far as I can see of "Quadrant Stationers" at the top of the pedestrianised bit of the moor, whar the Sports shop is situated, now.

Regarding the "Wimpy" burger bars. there were two on the top side of town, a larger one just below WH Smith on Fargate, and a smaller one (that seemed to me to be better quality) on Pinstone Street, between H Samuel Jewellers corner, and Cambridge Street, about where the Nottingham building Society is now (below the shop which was Damart)

the one on Fargate became a Burger King, before closing down, (a second BK opened in the city down opposite the old BHS on Haymarket)

I can't remember when the Pinstone Street wimpy closed, maybe about 1985?
