I seem to remember the lift attendents always being old woman that sat on stools asking what floor you wanted and pressing the buttons

The job had its ups and downs.

Well, there is a map.

Key :

1) Curry House (possibly called Shalimar ??), right on the roundabout

2) Second-hand/electroics shop

3) Car showroom, I think a bit of the end of workhouse lane used to remain, leading onto West Bar

4) Mystery building (the Pack Horse public house used to stand here - 100 years ago, I'm looking for a 3 or four story, round fronted building, that used to stand here in the Sixties/Seventies

5) and/or 5a) Was there a small pub here called The White Hart ??

6) Turners Gun/Fishing etc shop

(Diagram as correct in 1990)

post-124-1174991288.jpg

2) Second hand shop

Wasn't this called Galaxy? I seem to remember back in the late 80's going with my sister to buy a car stereo for her Ford Escort.

6) Turners gun shop

I remember this being here when I started working at West Bar in 1998. Next to it was a dirty looking kabab shop that was said to be used by all the taxi drivers. As grubby as it looked, I was tod they did great kebabs, but I never tried them.

I wish during the early years of my working life (late 90's) i'd thought to take photos of the city centre, but digital cameras were only just getting popular and I didn't have one, nor did I have a mobile phone that could take photos until the mid 2000's.

Anyone remember Lift Up Your Skirts and Fly boutique, behind the Peace Gardens on a corner of the old roads that they flattened to build the Town Hall extension monstrosity.  The shop stocked Biba clothes, including feather boas.  Brilliant!

Has anyone yet mentioned the Fifty Shilling Tailors, in a parade of shops somewhere opposite the Manor Cinema? It was a good name even though the price was probably way out of date by the time (late 1950s) I first noticed it. My Dad said he thought that when they first opened they would make you a suit for fifty shillings, but I don't know how long ago that was.

EDIT: Wikipedia suggests that it was one of a chain, founded in Leeds in 1905, which eventually grew to 400 shops, and that it was later sold and became John Collier ("The window to watch").

No-one remember Alex Owen TV shop on the Moor? They were a country wide concern, we used to know one of their travelling salesman and every month to six weeks he'd bring a brand new colour to for use to use, when he brought a new one the other went back in its box and taken back for stock, this went of for over a year till we could afford our own tv.

There wasn't any shops opposite the Manor Cinema, there was however shops on City Road just past the cinema.

I definitely remember it as being on the opposite side - that is to say, the left-hand side as you come up from Gleadless. But this is 50 + years ago, so who knows?

In no particular order:

I remember taking a girl (who I had a thing for) to Biba on High Street, just below the entrance to Chapel Walk, to buy her a Biba Diary that she was desperate for.  That was 1976.

There was a Laura Ashley by the Peace Gardens in the 1980s.

Dixon's on The Moor, which actually sold sportswear and trainers upstairs.

Maurice Bywaters, the "cut price" jewellers in Castle Yard (?) just off Fargate.

Rare and Racey on Division Street - is it still there?

A golf shop on Norfolk Row which was there for a few years from about 1976.  Name anyone?

K W Hawley Tools, just off The Moor.  Ken Hawley was a very well known industrial historian, a Sheffield version of Fred Dibnah.  I had a Saturday job there in 1975.

Johnny Fantham's barbers shop on Division Street.

The SWFC shop in Orchard Square.

The SWFC kiosk on Angel Street

Spoils, on Church Street - household goods.

Guns n Ammo, on the Wicker, (honestly).

The first Virgin Records store at Moorfoot.  Opened in about 1973, after The Moor was pedestrianised, and the Manpower Services Commission Building made that whole area a concrete wilderness, (well done the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire).  Did they only sell copies of Tubular Bells?

Pu$$y Power, and two different locations for Robert Brady, on Ecclesall Road.

Uncle Sam's Chuck Wagon, and Yankee's, both on Ecclesall Road, (should be in restaurants section).  What was the similar American Diner type place at the bottom of Glossop Road, close to the top of West Street, (1980s)?

Big Brown (I kid you not!).  A sportswear shop in the precinct on Ecclesall Road, opposite the bottom of Greystones Road, (1970s).

The Chocolate Box, just above Carterknowle Road, on Ecclesall Road South, (maybe still there?).

Three here I need help with:

What was the expensive menswear shop, (1970s/80s) at the bottom of Barkers Pool, next door to Fatorini's the jewellers?  Incidentally, Fatorini's made the FA Cup, as well as the new replacement FA Cup in the 90s.

You know the little alleyway which cut through from High Street, (below The Old Blue Bell), into Hartshead Square?  It came out just above the entrance to The Dove and Rainbow.  Well when I was VERY young, in the late 60s, there was a men's hairdressers down that alleyway, on the RHS, which was THE place to get your hair cut.  Anyone know the name?

There was a fantastic shoe shop near Manor Top on City Road, which sold seconds of really expensive shoes.  They also had a small outlet in the arcade at Darnall, Staniforth Road/Greenland Road.  I still own a pair of 100% leather cowboy boots I got there in the 80s.  Not worn them in a while.  :-)
