Are the following Pubs still open ?

I'm after some help please, hopefully easy for those of you that drive past these places on a daily basis. I have a bunch of Pubs listed as "Still open" but, in the majority of cases, I don't have a clue, Sheffield has changed a lot in the last year, never mind about since 1981 when I left for pastures anew.

If you know whether, open or closed, and, if closed, a year would be appreciated (even a best guess, we can modify later if a better date becomes available).

I've split 'em into manageable chunks and removed all details, other than our current best guess at the date the place opened. If you can give a better opening date then please do so, with some kind of supporting evidence (e.g. PictureSheffield, Kelly's 1881 etc etc).

Many Thanks In Anticipation

All still open

...

Barrel Inn 69 Broad Lane 1821 NOW FAGANS... Joseph M Fagan had the place in 1951

Excellent, Thanks for your effort, will update the lists. The fact places are still open is just as important as finding places that closed 100+ years ago.

Cheers

The problem is - for how long will they remain open

Great work though

I shall keep looking as I travel around

Many Thanks, don't know how long they will remain open, just hoping to record some history before they are gone.

The Shakey was known as The Shakey certainly in the 70's, one of my Dad's Pubs, we lived on Dykes Hall Road till 1977.

I'm sure there was a pub on a corner of Flat Street near Fitzalan Square, called the Elephant Inn. It seemed such a tiny pub to have such a 'big' name like that. It disappeared in the 1960's I believe. I've no idea when it first came into existence. There was also a Hotel on Exchange St called Exchange Hotel - with a lounge bar, just round the corner from Fitzalan Square. I'm sure it closed in the early 1970's. Part way down Waingate from Fitzalan Square on the left hand side of the road there was a pub called 'The Brunswick' that also closed in the 70's or early 80's - and in the rag and tag market area there was a pub called 'The Newmarket'on the corner of a street (long gone to make way for the huge parkway roundabout) that led up to the old Park district where a whole load of pubs disappeared one by one on Duke St in the 1970's and 80's..

Hi, Welcome to the Site and Thanks for the information.

I didn't have Henry listed, now I do lol

As a matter of fact, I have lots of people listed from 1881 (Trade Directory) and from 1893 (Trade again) but I didn't even have a column for 1891, now I do, with one entry !!! So, any more 1891 Census entries more than appreciated from anyone.

Here's what we have for the Horse and Jockey :

Horse and Jockey 638 Attercliffe Road Opened circa 1833, still open giving a span of 175 years !

John Hawke 1833

Robert Colley 1841

Thomas Hickson 1852 and 1854

George Johnson (Beerhouse) 1871

Henry Justice 1891 and

Mrs Eliz Burgin 1951

Theres never been a Elm Tree on Loxley New Road [Take no notice what you read in Pub on Every Corner]

It's the Yew Tree corner of Loxley New Road.

It's never been closed as far as I know, it's still open but in my opinion it's not as nice since it changed hands.

The Vine, Cemetery Road, looks like it is being turned into flats at the moment. Sad to read here that it dates from 1871.
