sando
Does any one know if there was ever an Olive Grove, on or in the vecinity of Olive Grove Road, Heeley?
Bayleaf
According to Peter Harvey's Street Names book, the road is named after a house nearby called Olive Grove, built in 1837. I can't imagine olive trees would last long enough to form a grove in Sheffield's climate. Perhaps the person who built the house just fancied the name? sando
I thought it was unlikely, but olive trees will grow in sheffield, there are or were a couple of olive trees growing by the canal, suposedly grown as olives or olive stones were thrown from canal barges. A bit like the Fig trees that grow on the near by River Don then.
knightstemplar
As for the fig tree on the Don I heard that it was because the water that came out of the steelworks was warm so it survived pretty well. It didnt look to good after the floods though, waiting for the spring to see if it recovers.
