Sheffield History

Recommended Posts

I've tidied up the main list and added more pictures and info where possible. Any additions, corrections or other assistance gratefully recieved.

The photo listed of the Cinecenta Flat Street is in fact the paybox of the ABC Cinema (later Cannon) Angel Street. I was one of the ABC managers and spent many hours sat in that paybox!

Another one for the list:

The Rutland. It stood at the corner of Rutland Road and Burton Road. An aunt of mine was an usherette there before the war (WWII). The building was demolished and redeveloped as an office block.

I am sure there was a Heely Green Cinema or at least a cinema located at Heely Green which I went to in the early 1950's

I looked on the list but could not see The Chantrey at Woodseats , they had a dance hall in the basement , I am stretching my memory but I thought that there was also the Woodseats Palace nearby.

I've enjoyed reading this thread, and I especially like the cutting from The Star with its cinema listings - I recall eagerly perusing that page to find out what was on at our local cinemas.

When I clicked on the links to the Rex and Manor cinemas, which were my local ones, in your list, I don't get any pictures. Is there a button which I'm supposed to press which I have not found yet?

Hi Athy, the problem is due to old and expired links.

Here are some new picture updates for both Cinemas ....

Rex Cinema, Mansfield Road.

Manor Cinema, City Road.

Wasn't there a cinema where the Mecca bingo stands at the junction of Flat street and Esperanto place.

If it's the one I am thinking of I remember it as having one of the first cinemascope screens and I saw South Pacific there in the late 50's early 60's.

I can't remember the name so I can't check the list.

Hi peterinfrance, the name you want is Odeon, you'll find the thread 'Odeon at Flat Street' in this section or just type Odeon in the search box.
