Many years ago I worked for the School Libraries Dept and visited all the local authority schools regularly. On one visit to parkside the head had got all the old logbooks out and was writing a history. He read out a few entries from the early years of the last century. One said simply " Another very cold day. The ink in the inkwells frozen again." Another said " A number of children absent today due to the icy weather and their lack of shoes".

I went to Carfield Infant and Junior School 1945 to !951. However after leaving the infant School I went to the annex on Gleadless Road, opposite Northcote Road.

My brother went th Heeley Bank and then to Carfield Junior Annex

We both then then went to High Storrs

My wife went to Heeley Bank and then King Egberts

Schools known as Carfield Cowsheds and Heeley Bucket Bangers

Hucklow Road Infant and Junior...1947 to 1952

Acres Hill Junior...1952 to 1953

Hartley Brook Junior...1953 to 1954

Firth Park Grammar School...1954 to 1959.

I believe all my old schools are still there except Firth Park which, in an act of civic vandalism, was reduced to rubble and replaced by a "Community College".

Although we had a very enjoyable year re-union back in 2009.

I attended Gleadless Primary school fro several years from 1935. In those days the classrooms were lighted by small

glas chandeliers from ornamental glass strips were suspended. Whenever a light breeze touched the fixture, a melodious

tnkle would prevail above our heads. That was the nice memory.

As most pupils in the first classes, we lived on the new Chatsworth Park estate and had to cross the park and exit by

the gennel on Ridgeway Road. As youngsters, this was a dangerous undertaking as we were always mobbed by a

gang of bullies from a higher class. After school we had to cross the ground before the bullies came out, otherwise

they would chase us and rough us up somewhat. Here is a photo of our mothers who came one day to escort us home.

As you see that didn't stop the blighters from getting into the picture. Anyhow I think they improved the photo somewhat.

Is that the bottom of Ridgehill Avenue in the background?

If so is that the allotments in front of them?

There are still a few allotments there to this day but they are very badly placed for access and do back on to the gardens of those houses.

I have no idea how the park looks today Dave for I haven't been back there for over 50 years.

In the dip between the houses and the park ran an open stream which went undergound when

it reached the school wall.

It's more or less the same. I have posted many pictures of it in a topic specifically on Hollinsend Park* (link required)

The stream is still there, it dries up in hot summers, and floods in wet weather.
