I can only slightly remember the hysteria caused by Sutcliffe, Very scary times even in Sheffield

Sergeant Robert Ring and PC Robert Hydes caught Sutcliffe when he came to Sheffield, he was with a "girl" on Melbourne Lane, where is that?

'Sheffield will not be missed. Next on the list'. Sutcliffe's poem sent to the Sheffield Star newspaper gives some insight into his state of mind.' Source Yorkshireripper.com

It was Melbourne Avenue, not melbourne Lane and it is just two roads or so down from Ashdell Road in Broomhill as I recall.

Thanks for that,

I erased my last post by mistake,

Can you remember the hysteria? What was it like in Sheffield? Were the women petrified?

I was born in 1973 so can only remember small detail.

At the time The Ripper was caught my wife to be lived at Brunswick Nurses Home which was only about 100 yards from where he was caught. The girls who lived there were pleased they didn't know he lurked around there !

It was scary, very scary. I remember escorting my Mother and Sisters wherever they had to go. People in the main stayed locked in their own homes, only go out if you need to.

The Door to door enquiries showed how much clue they had, they questioned everyone, or at least made enquiries, my Father was 60 at the time, he was at work at the time they were asking about. They had to call back to try to speak to me; on the second visit they were happy enough when my Mother told 'em I was at School at the time. How can you be sure ? He was doing his Maths 'O' Level, if he missed that, I'll kill him !

If you are driving up Glossop Road, just past the Hallamshire Hospital there are some traffic lights where Newbould Lane Crosses between Newbould lane to your left and Glossop Rd straight ahead is a small lane with bollards (to stop access) this is Melbourne Avenue. Looks a bit secluded.

I was born in the same year.. but in County Durham, not Sheffield, but I can still remember the worry that was felt up there at the time..even though we were a few hours drive away.

I can remember the women in our, friends and family all being worried about going out at night and this only got worse when that nutter from Sunderland sent the hoax tapes to the police, leading them to belive that the ripper was from the North East.

There was another side to the Ripper strory that isnt mentioned ....and that is the gossip and rumour.

It was almolst a daily thing to hear another tale about the Ripper.

One that sticks out in my mind went ...."Theres this bloke down south who is the spitting image of the Ripper. He's been nicked so many times now, that the local poilce have given him a card to prove he's not the Ripper"

Now first of all its rubbish.

If they knew what he looked like they'd have had him straight away....or would they..look at the photofits from the period and there all pretty similar.

Secondly..how come, in these tales the bloke is always "Down South"

And finally That was only one of a million tales flying around at the time and they were all rubbish...but we all listened to the and repeated them which, in the long run, only went to further Sutcliffes reputation.

Stuart's directions to the Ripper arrest are spot on.

I used to go meetings at the large former house where he was arrested.

He had parked up the little drive.

It certainly made the meeting after the arrest interesting.

Lucky to catch him.

Well done those constables

Is the drive and the building where he was caught still there?

As far as I can remember he was caught in his car on Melbourne Drive.

For the very very interested Yes you can still walk down to see the spot.

Go past the Hallamshire hospital towards Broomhill.

At the first set of lights look across to your left and you will see Melbourne Avenue

They have put bollards at the end of Melbourne Avenue.

At the time the Ripper was caught you could take your car down

The spot was popular with ladies and clients or so I am told

The fear in the City was incredible, my Father and me (aged 16) were both questioed, I was doing my Maths "O" level at the time in question, Dad was at work at Neepsend.

Can you prove where your son was Mrs B ?

If he skipped his Exam, he's in more bother than you can imagine.

At 16, I had to escort my three sisters (older, but better lokking), my Mom and my Grandmother wherever they went, even to the Camm Street Chippy.

i heard a rumour that he was going to released soon, i hope not but can anyone shed any light on this

I think what has been said is, in the opinion of his doctor at Broadmoor he no longer a threat, therefore should be downgraded to a lower security level.

Given that his orginal sentence was a minimum of 30 yrs, this could lead to him being released.

Thats my interpretation on this

Regarding the Ripper's arrest, my mum worked at the DHSS on Spital Hill at the time and she was a visiting officer. Not long after his arrest she had to visit a woman who was claiming "Social Security' as she was unemployed ;-)

This turned out to be a bit of a porky as "unemployed" didn't apply to all her activities - the lady was Olivia Reivers - knowing my mum she probably had her prosecuted - I wonder what her defense was?

Olivia Reivers, 24, who had been a prostitute for four years, was walking along Broomhall Street when she saw the Rover car. "I was walking on the pavement when it stopped. The driver asked me if I was doing business and I said I was. I told him it was £10 in the car with a rubber. He said that it was OK."
