Hi,

I am interested in the ALDAM family if anyone can help. I have the usual census and directory references but looking for any Parish record info.

Many thanks,

Liz lol

Any more hints ? The Tanner's of Upperthorpe, the butcher of Sheffield Park (who suffered a Christmas Day burglary), the Booze-vendors of Church Street, the young Aldam overcome by Vinegar fumes ??

I am also looking for anyone who can do a look up for me. John ALDAM I know married Judith BEST Catherdral St Peter on 04 Dec 1808, but I can not find his or her baptism records - and thier parents. If anyone could find them I would be very grateful! :o)

Thanks.

Do you have the burial record for Judith ALDAM aged 54 of Commercial St wife of John, Shoemaker buried 22 Oct 1840. This puts her birth date at approx 1786. I cannot pinpoint a John with any certainty.

There is no baptism for her at SS Peter & Paul.

hello Bonnie,

when you were searching for a baptism what surname were you looking for?

John ALDAM in 1841 (indexed as 'OLDAM' at Sheffield Indexers)

1841 census

piece 1337 e.d. 4 folio 33a

Commercial St

John ALDAM 55 boot manufer

Thomas ALDAM 20

Mary Jane ALDAM 20 assistant

Henery ALDAM 15 assistant

George SPEIGHT 15 apprentice

Charles ARDRON 15 apprentice

Ann STACEY 15 female servant

The IGI suggests the mother of Thomas was a Julia or Juliet BEST. And there is this baptism:

Baptism from FamilySearch

JULIET BEST

Christening: 19 MAY 1786 Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

Father: JOHN BEST Family

Mother: MARGARET

Batch No.: C150523

Maybe this is the same person as Judith or there is a second marriage somewhere.

Hugh

Hi Liz,

For many years a John? Aldam had a newsagents at Wheata Road just of Wordsworth Avenue, Parson cross, Sheffield 5. John's shop was roughly opposite Wheata Place, St Pauls Church is on the corner opposite the shops.

I believe John retired recently so you may be able to trace him through the new owners/Estate Agents.

Hope this doesn't come too late for you.

Cheers

Chris
