If I remember correctly the road up the side of the Roscoe was called Jobson Road. I think someone has been at the OS map with an eraser. As a young lad I used to go to the Saturday morning matinees to watch Dick Barton Special Agent etc, and the queue of spotty lads wearing snake belts to hold up their short trousers used to wend it's way up Jobson Road. In much later years I used to collect bottles of LPG from a depot on Jobson Road for our static caravan.

HD

Yes it was Jobson Rd, looks to be a mark where the J was.

I have amended OS map #29,

thanks for pointing it out HD.

So it would be the Roscoe?

Apologies Bayleaf .... yes it was the Roscoe. When I clicked on "view new content" this morning it took me straight to alexanders post missing yours completely ..... that's 2 imaginary coconuts I have to find now.

Plenty of clues to go on,

but it's a mystery to me.

It is Abbey Lane from the junction with Meadow head.

Mitchell Rd on the right

Thanks vox,

I had been pondering on that one for a while,

looks like the public toilets are still there then?

Yes I noticed them too. I'll put them on the topic.

I'm sure I remember there still petrol pumps on the garage forecourt until (dare I say) recently. Maybe the last 20 years or so.

The poster on the gable end that I thought said Dalethorpes,

a closer look revealed Palethorpses, never heard of them.

It turns out that they were a long established Birmingham company,

who made sausages.

Link .. Palethorpes

So what is this "box" and what does it say on it - any ideas ?

I think it is an old K2 telephone box, there was a later K6 on that site.

Why are telephone box designs prefixed with a letter K ?

K2 is a Himalayan mountain

K9 is a robotic dog

Not a very logical or even very inventive idea from the BT telephone box design centre (what a quango they would be)

K for Kiosk (first used for the K1 in 1920)

What about this location

Well

For some unknown reason I always thought Ecclesall Terminus was on Ecclesall Rd opposite the shelter, well you live and learn

A quick look through the Ecclesall photos in the Crich Tramway Village Photograph Archive makes the terminus look as steep as your image, or very much flatter, depending on where the photo was taken from.

For example, this one makes the terminus look like it has a slight gradient,

and this one is similar to your image.

Is this the place and general direction ?

If it is I'll go up there tomorrow. (Hopefully)

Looking again, the map shows it as being on the left going down. On Stuart's photo and the Crich ones, It looks to be going up hill. You can tell by the level of the shelter's roof and supports.

With the terminus on the left, it's down hill towards Silver Hill Road.

Baffled.

The terminus is on a short stretch of private reservation to the right hand side of the roadway (looking northwards, or uphill): it was where the wide grassed area is now.

EDIT

Beaten to it by Stuart: those pictures explain the layout so much more easily than my waffle.
