Looks like the guy on the right is really having to run to catch that tram before it pulls away.

Brown Street, about to turn into Furnival Street? Would not be surprised if this was an enthusiasts' tour, as it is screened "Special", and this section of track was popular with enthusiasts in the latter years due to it's infrequent use (generally peak hour extras only)

must admit that I'm not 100% sure of the answer.

I have never seen a photo taken from the bridge before. Most tram photos in this area are of Wadsley Bridge terminus or of trams under the railway bridge.

There is a photo here from a different angle (top deck of another tram?) which shows some of the roadside buildings on the RHS (and is that the shadow of the phone box?) and Map 247 nearly shows the brickworks and definitely shows the phone box and the rounded nature of the shop at the junction of Fox Hill Road.

Lets keep this going,

Top of Hounsfield Road, with Western Bank and the line to Broomhill and Crookes going off to the left, lots of trams on the Walkley route and a man who looks like a pointsman walking back to his little shelter. Doesn't look like this anymore!

The track in the foreground is in Hounsfield Road: the trams in shot are at the junction of Hounsfield Road and Winter Street, Western Bank goes off to the left and Brook Hill is the road to the right. Perhaps this map will make it a bit clearer:

I have trouble envisaging this area sometimes, as it now so different. What is left of Hounsfield Road is a cul-de-sac and the section of Winter Street has disappeared entirely under various University buildings (I think - I haven't been that way for soem time)

Looks like it is (or was) the Scala Cinema. Photo on Picture Sheffield shows and describes it as being at the corner of Winter Street and Brook Hill.

Think I get it now, its the fact that Winter Street formed the junction with Brookhill that was confusing me, as you say it vastly different now.

It confuses me too. Winter Street used to turn by the Star & Garter and head down to the cross roads in the picture. These days the through road goes straight along Bolsover Street to the roundabout.

...ok , another clue is - the Rotherham tram, behind ,operated the 69 route between Sheffield and Rotherham , so would run along Wicker, Attercliffe , Tinsley areas !

Also of some interest is the actual Sheffield tram featured - 501 - which was the first of the new style "Roberts" cars (also called "jubilee" cars , as they were new in 1952 - the Queens jubilee year) Looks like it is on some sort of "enthusiast tour"(maybe new?) Although they seemed really modern at the time , they only lasted around 8 years before they were scrapped due to the abolition of the Sheffield tramway network in Oct 1960. As a comparrison , the Supertram is around 15 years old !

But...Rotherham trams finished in 1949, the through route being severed in 1948 when the rebuilding of a bridge at Tinsley led to the tracks being taken up and not being replaced, before the Roberts cars were built...

Its a bit specialised then, the experts know the answer us normal guys are struggling

1 Tram finished in 1949

1 Tram was new in 1952

Sheffield & Rotherham, its got to be Tinsley then :)
