mickjj
The Royal Infirmary was a hospital in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The establishment opened in 1792 under the name Sheffield General Infirmary, renamed Royal Infirmary in 1897 and closed in 1980. Built by J.D.Webster & Sons, many of the establishment's features made it unique. An innovative octagonal outpatients department was built in 1884, and was lit by a cupola. It had a roof of wrought iron lattice girders and a tiled waiting room with the consulting rooms leading off it. Young & Hall, specialists in hospital architecture, extended it in 1900. A nurses home was built on the grounds in 1897. Infirmary 1906 Infirmary 1940 The Waiting Room
Sheffield History
Spookiest place ever (apart from Middlewood Hospital) And (looking at the last picture posted) is it just me or is the whole of Sheffield waiting ? And is it just me or was the total male population of Sheffield incapable of eating their dinners without stabbing themselves in their eye with a fork ? And is it just me or was the total male population of Sheffield incapable of eating their dinners without stabbing themselves in their eye with a fork ? That is a Saturday morning waiting room............ That's what they got off the missus for going to the pub on a friday night and spending all their wages without handing over the housekeeping money. I had my leg set in plaster there in the old plaster room which was up the side off Albert Terrace Road.
Sheffield History
I remember going past the place before it was redeveloped and being scared every single time. The stories of the ghosts in there were popular at the time..

Sheffield History
Drove round it today - I sneaked in (in the car) past security as he went for his lunch. Norwich Union and Plusnet are based there. They renovated the buildings well and did a good job Couldn't stop for pics though - the security guard came back armed with a baked potato and big bag of chips
Guest coffee cup
:o I used to work there for Norwich Union some 14 years ago. Our main files were kept downstairs in what was the mortuary. I remember it being very cold down there, and some of the other members of staff had reported strange things happening down there. Some even reported seeing strange figures walking down the corridor, doors would close by them self and there was an even stranger smell. It is making me shiver just thinking about it. Guest Desy
I heard that under the hospital there was a tunnel so that the patients could go from one side of the hospital to chapel without going outside in the cold. Is it still there?
jiginc
I heard that under the hospital there was a tunnel so that the patients could go from one side of the hospital to chapel without going outside in the cold. Is it still there? The tunnel had windows at a high level I was walking down it and a cat who must have been sleeping on the sill jumped down and ran off. Scared the life out of me. Sheffield History
It would have to be a nuclear bomb alert to get me down there and even then I'd consider seriously the option of being frazzled in the blast ha ha ha !!
graham c
I WAS IN THERE TWICE FOR NOSE OPS. THE FIRST A SINUS OP,THE SECOND TO PUT RIGHT WHAT THEY DID WRONG FIRST TIME. ALSO HAD TO GO TO INFIRMARY DAILY WHEN ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD AFTER I HAD POLIO. HAD GALLONS OF PENICILLAN PUMPED INSIDE ME AND NOW I AM ALLERGIC TO IT. SORT OF LIKE WORK. WHEN I WENT INTO LODGE MOOR VIA CITY GENERAL, I HAD INFANTILEPARALISES. WHEN I CAME OUT IT HAD CHANGED ITS NAME TO POLIOMILITIS.IS IT NO WONDER I WAS UNCERTAIN WHAT TO SAY WHEN PEOPLE ASKED ME WHAT HAD BEEN WRONG WITH ME FOR MANY MONTHS,AND EVEN IF I HAD, HOW COULD HAVE GOT MY GOB ROUND THEM WORDS. asteener1867
I heard that under the hospital there was a tunnel so that the patients could go from one side of the hospital to chapel without going outside in the cold. Is it still there? This is Asteeners wife replying. I was a nurse at Sheffield Royal Infirmary between 1973 until it closed and everyone transferred upto the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There was a series of tunnels underneath the Infirmary. As a night sister when walking from the medical block to surgical block or to ENT we used the underground as all the main entrances at ground level were locked. It was very eerie. The underground was also the area near to the kitchens where all the meals were prepared. As a student nusre I did one of my assessments (aseptic technique) in the A/E dept. This was where the new Tesco is now (wines and spirits dept!) Does anyone remember the underground?

GrinderBloke
Does anyone have a photo of The Royal Infirmary before closure? I remember the large main entrance porch with cream coloured Bedford ambulances, the type with a bonnet rather than a flat front. The other thing I remember is the oxygen plant on the corner of Albert Terrace Rd / Infirmary Rd all the pipes and cylinders covered in ice. What strange memories I have... can't tell you what I had for dinner yesterday :(
